Dr. Ben Allen will be out of town for several days on account of the serious illness of his brother. L. T. Clary, one of the up-country hustling farmers, sold his crop of cot ton in Gaffney Thursday for 8 cents. J. B. Porter, of Shelby, was in the city Wednesday night to see his little nephew. Wilburn Portei, who got his leg broken a few days ago. The Southern Railway Company has placed a baggage wagon at the office here, which has been needed for some time to facilitate the handling of heavy trunks. J. Pinson moved yesterday from the old Lipscomb hotel to a new cottage on Grenard street, owned by M. L. Ross, and has given tin his boarding business. L. J. Kirk, the watchman at the Southern Railway crossing near the depot, is now occupying a new cab six by ten feet, which was placed by the Southern yesterday. State of South Carolina, County of Cherokee, It appearing to the satisfaction of the County Board of Education, that more than one-third of the voters re siding within the proposed School Dis trict, who return real or personal property for taxation, have petitioned this Board asking that an election b# ordered to determine whether or not an additional levy of 2 mills be voted for the purpose of supplementing the regular constitutional and other school tax of School District No. 13, which district shall have the boun daries as set off by survey of G. B. Fowler in 1905. It is, therefore, ordered by the County Board of Education for said county and State, That such an elec tion be held at Beaver Dam church, in said district, on Tuesday, April 4th, 1905, at which election only such elect ors as return real or personal property for taxation, and exhibit their tax re ceipts and registration certificates, shall be allowed to vote, as provided in Vol. 1, Section 1208 of the Civil Code of South Carolina. Those voting for such additional school tax will use a printed or writ ten ballot on which is the w r ord “Yes.’’ I Those voting against such additional school tax will use a printed or writ-1 ten ballot on which is the word “No." For the purpose of connducting said election the School Trustees for School District No. 13, D. Teachers will please answer the fol lowing questions, with as little delay as possible, consistent with a full in vestigation. Send replies to your County Superintendent of Education. Be sure*to put date and name of coun ty on your letter. The purpose is to form an idea of the number of illiter ates in each community, and to that end the faithful cooperation of every teacher is urged. 1. How many children between the ages of 8 and 12, living within three miles of your school, cannot read? 2. What reason do their parents give for their non-attendance? 3. What do you think is the reason for their non-attendance? 4. How many of the parents of these children are Illiterate? 5. How does the financial condi tion of the illiterate parents compare with those who can read and w'rite? 6. How many children between the ages of 8 and 12, living more than three miles from a schoolhouse, are attending school? 7. Hov r many are not? 8. Is there, in your opinion, danger to children coming to and returning from school In your district? 9. Briefly, what w’ould you suggest to secure a greater attendance of children living far and near? Quite a number of farmers have 11 ■■ been in ;he city this week, owing to . luiiiuwmy the ground being too wet to plow, and | many of them have entered their names on The Ledger list. They say they cannot do without The Ledger, for they want the news. There will he services at the Episco pal church on Sunday, March 19th, at 11 A. M., and 4 P. M.; also a special litany service on Friday, March 17th, at 4 P. M. This will be Mr. Memmin- ger’s last Sunday in Gaffney, as he leaves for Sewanee, Tenn., on Monday, the 20th of this month. Arrangements are being made for the enlarging of the Cherokee Avenue Baptist church, by building an exten sion of twenty to thirty feet to it in the rear, oval shaped. The floors will be extended and the pulpit and choir will be placed on the new part, and they expect to have the church heated by steam. These changes will be made at an early date. The Great Bargain Sale At The Dixie Has Been Going On For Nearly Two Months. The Robbs School Closes. The Robbs school, taught by Miss Maude Thompson, closed last Fri day, after a successful session of six months. The children have improved very fast In their studies, and the teacher was very much pleased with them, as they are very quiet and take such an interest in their w T ork. Miss Thompson’s work was highly appreciated by the patrons and her thoughtful managing kept everything working nicely. They hope to secure her services agaiin. Some weeks ago the patrons of the school presented the school with a large hell, which was very much ap preciated by all. On account of so much sickness the school had to close without any public exercises. My sales have been far beyond ray most sanguine expectations considering the low prices of cotton, but I still have some good bargains remaining from the original stock which I’m still offering at the former low prices. Am receiving New Goods daily which will go at a very small profit. The congregation of the Limestone Street Presbyterian church met last Sabbath morning to consider the resig nation of Rev. W. R. Potte.', who Ins ; served the church as pastor for sev eral years. The language in which Mr. Potter clothed his message left no other alternative but to accept. There has been no friction between pastor and people, but Mr. Potter be lieved he could do a better work else where, so decided to accept the evange* listic work of Enoree Presbytery. No one has been spoken of as a probable successor. Mr. Potter and family will move to Greers about April 1st. The best wishes of his old congregation will go with him.
