Both Gubernatorial Candidates Expect
the Office—All Sorts of Wild Ru
mors Are Afloat in Regard to ttie
Situation.
Denver, Colo., March 15.—All sorts
of wild rumors regarding the situation
in the gubernatorial contests were in
ciriculation today. One of these was
to the effect that two of Governor
Adams’ supporters in the joint legis
lative convention had been kidnaped
This lacks verification. It is evident
that the final vote /will determine
whether Governor Alva Adams shall
continue to hold the executive chair
or shall surrender it to James H. Pea
body will be very close.
It was on this account that the Pea
body leaders secured an adjournment
of the joint convention yesterday. Al
though 48 Republicans, only one less
than a majority of the joint convention
voted yesterday for the recess, it is
confidently asserted by Adams’ friends
that Peabody will not have more than
44 votes in the final determination ol
the contest. Three Republicans who
voted for the recess have said that
they did so merely to enable Senator
Wood, who was absent yesterday, tc
be present when the vote in the con
test is taken. The efforts of the Pea
body leaders to have his contest treat
ed as the political issue seem to have
resulted, it is said, in finding mem
bers who have pledged themselves nor
to vote for Peabody under any cir
cumstances. It is said that these Re
publicans have even rejected a propo
sitiai to vote for Peabody on condi
tion that he would resign immediate]-
after being seated. The action oi
Lieutenant Governer McDonald, in
casting the deciding vote on the mo
tion for a recess yesterday has opened
up a wide range of discussion.
The Peabody and anti-Peabody Re
publicans then conferred on a scheme
to seat Peabody as governor with an
understanding that he will immediate
ly resign, leaving the office to Lieu
tenant Governor McDonald.
One of the leaders of the anti-Pea
body Republicans said, after adjourn
ment, that Peabody’s resignation had
already been promised.

bride’s father dead and the groom se
riously wounded is the sequel to a
wedding here.
March 3 Lawrence A. Plummer anti
Mfcss Pansy Perry were married at
Clarendon.
A day or two later W. H. Perry
heard that Plummer was already mar
ried and set up an Investigation. Plum
mar admitted having been married, but
alaimed that he was divorced.
Perry, however, took his daughter
home. Last Monday Perry took the
young lady to the home of an uncle
In order to keep her from Plummer.
A fight ensued. Perry cut Plummei
a number of times and shot him in the
head, but Plummer finally shot Perry
kiling him almost instantly.
Sheriff Black went to the scene ol
the tragedy this afternoon, but Plum
mer was too badly hurt to be brought
back. Plummer claims to be from
Atlanta, Ga., and to some he stated
that he came from Missouri. Very
little is known of him here.

PROSECUTING POLYGAMISTS.
Detective Asserts that Officer Was a
Member of Whitecap League.
Jackson, Miss., March 15.—A mem
ber of the executive committee of the
Law and Order league of Franklin
county arrived in the city this after
noon to confer with the governor in
regard to the suspension of Sherifl
Newman, of that county.
It is alleged that the detective em
ployed by Governor Vardaman has
signed statements from 300 members
of the former whitecaping organization
detailing ita workings.
Sheriff Newman is alleged to be a
member of the wnitecaps' organiza
tion, and the executive committee oi
the Law and Order league will arrive
in the city tomorrow for the purpose
of conferring with the governor and
placing evidence before him of the
alleged connection of Sheriff Newman
with the whitecap organization.
Under the law, there is considera
ble doubt, as to the governor having
authority to remove a sheriff, but he
can snsperd him and appoint an inte
rim official.

New York, March 15.—Wholesale
prosecution of Mormons on the charge
of polygamy have begun at Raymond,
Alberta, one of the northwest terri
toriep, which has been made in a prov
ince, according to a Tribune special
from Winnipeg. The mounted police
have taken up the campaign against
the Mormons, who number several
thousand, having moved from the
United States in the last five years.
The first action was taken againsi
a well known resident of Magrath
who recently brought two wives froir
the United States, whom he is said
to have married in Utah. He declared
he was not living in a polygamous
state, but was given his choice of leav
ing the country or being prosecuted
Similar notices have been served
on many others known to have more
than one wife.

struggles, Mrs. Minnie Rounds has
held until the arrival of police, a mar
believed to be wanted in several states
on the charge of “swindling.” Tht
captive gave the name of Charles E
Raymond.
Mrs. Rounds was approached by Ray
mond, who wanted to advertise hei
property for sale. She recognized the
man as one to whomi she paid $4.8;
two months ago. She attacked hirr
with an umbrella and prevented him
from escaping. The police found in
the man’s possession leters from firms
and a list of more than 800 supposed
victims. There also was a note signed
“Miss Agnes Bransky, Winona, Minn.,'
accusing the man of swindling tht
writer and taking her watch, ring and
other Jewelry.
Plague Situation Is Improving.
New York, March 15.—The plague

Macon Tailors on a Strike.
Macon, Ga., March 15.—Union tail
ors in the employ of McKay & Bro
and Samuels & Simon are out on a
strike for a 10 per cent raise. In a
recent compromise they were allowec
a 6 per cent Increase, but today thej
demanded the 10 per cent increase, 8
difference involving about 33 cents or
every pair of pants cut.
NEW FURNACE FOR ALABAMA.
Alabama Coal and Iron Company Will
Erect Plant at Gadsden.
New York. March 15.—The execu
tive committee of the Alabama Con
solidated Coal and Iron company de
cided today to authorize the Immediate
construction of a new' furnace at Gads
den, as a duplicate of the plant now
there.
The matter has been under invest!
gation for some time and was praeti
■cally determined upon when the con
trol of the Alabama Consolidated com
pany was bought by the International
Power company.
The new furnace, which will have
every modern labor saving device, and
cost about $350,000, will be "built af
rapidly as passible, working night anc
day.
It will have a dally output of 20C
tons of pig iron. Its cost will he paid
for out of the surplus fund now it
the treasury.

ALABAMANS LYNCH NEGROES.
They Killed a Prominent White Mar
and Were Hanged by Mob.
Selma, Ala., March 15.—Ed and Wil!
Ptomey, two negroes, were lynched bj
a mob of citizens near Allenton, in
Wilcox county.
Tuesday morning one of the negroes
shot and fatally wounded Professoi
Claude Hardy, at Pine Apple, in the
same county. The two negroes had a
fight with some negroes on Professoi
Hardy’s plantation, and when he went
to see the Ptomey boys about it, one
of them pulled a pistol and shot him.
A posse was immediately organized

who were located in a house neai

The two negroes were finally taker
from the house by the posse, who car
ried them into a nearby swamp and
hanged them to a tree.
Lobster Dealers form Combine.
Portland, Me., March 15.—Four ol
the large-st wholesale lobster dealers
here, said to control half of the out
put of the country, are reported tc
have agreed an entering a combine
for which an agent has been canvass
ing the New England coast towns
during the past three weeks. He is
said to have made an agreement with
practically every big dealer in Maine
and the success of the plan is believed
to he assured. Promoters of the com
bine assert that no advance in prices
is contemplated, but the local dealers
contradict this statement and predict
an advance.

Hillsboro, N. H.. March 15.—A neph
ew of President Franklin Pierce has
found an autograph letter written bj
Jefferson Davis to Pierce, among docu
meats inherited from his uncle. Da
vis wrote from the senate chambei
under date of Jan. 30, 1860. Saying:
