Henderson, of Maud, after an illness of three weeks, was able to be in town Saturday. Rev. W. T. Thompson filled his reg ular appointment at Bethesda Sun day. Cabe Wood is now “super” at the Victor cotton seed oil mill. Cabe will make a good one. G. G. Byers, of the firm of Carroll & Byers, returned from the northern markets Friday. Look for theii ad. The monazite business in this sec tion has gotten in such a shape that it doesn’t pay to fool with the stuff. At the First Baptist church Sunday night two persons were received by letter. A male quartette sang a beau tiful selection. James McGinnis, of the firm of Mc Ginnis & Spake, of Cleveland county, N. C., was in town buying goods for their store Thursday. Cotton brought 8 cents all last week at Ciiffsides and Henrietta. Quite a number of the up-country farmers sold during the week. Ijouie Gaines has been doing some nice lettering on Mr. J. C. Jefferies’ office windows in the new National Bank building. The John Byars’ real estate of Cleve land county, N. C., was sold Saturday 11th. It was bid in by two of the sons, R. L. and J. D. Byars. Rev. Mr. Kughley, of Greers, came up Sunday afternoon to bury a child of Mr. John Noblet’s. He attended the chapel services at Limestone Col lege yesterday morning. M. V. Fitzgerald and family, of Lockhart, have become residents of the city They occupy the house of Dr. W. L. Settlemyer, on Cherokee av enue. ’Mrs. W. N. Austell returned yester- .day morning from the northern mark ets. She will soon open up her milli nery in the store room recently va cated by the Gaffney Drug Company. Miss Blanche Peeler has returned from the northern markets, where she had been to aid Mr. Byers in selecting a handsome and stylish line of mil linery goods for Carroll & Byers’ new establishment. On Friday evening, March 17th, the Y. W. C. A. of Limestone College will give an entertainment, consisting of music, recitations, tableaus, etc. The public is cordially invited. Admission 15 cents. Mr. Geo. W. Byars, one of The Led ger's good friends, is, we are sorry to announce, critically ill. Mr. Byars has suffered a relapse from an attack of grip. We sincerely trust his ill ness may not prove fatal. Today (Tuesday) is the last day for the payment of S-ltate and county tax es, after which costs and penalty will be attached. Yesterday about 10 per cent, of the taxes had not been paid. This makes the unpaid taxes smaller in amount than usual. Attention is directed to the extra advertisement of Jones J. Darby in this issue, giving details of payment of Col. J. L. Orr’s death policy by the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Com pany, which Mr. Darby represents in j this city. Col. Elliott Estes, general agent of 1 the Union Central Life Insurance Com pany, is in the city for a short time with Mr. Chas. P. Ligon, district man ager of this company. The Union Central Life is so well and favorably known as “the great policy-holder’s company,” that Mr. Ligon is meeting with much success here. ! Miss Sadie Edmunds, of Virginia, now has charge of Carroll & Byers’ ! millinery department. Miss Edmunds 1 was engaged in Camden during the last season. She is a charming young woman, with much experience in her line, and she will take pleasure in giv ing the ladies the benefit of her ex tensive knowledge in all things per taining to feminine headwear. H. H. Anderson, of Tucapau, who is general manager of the company store there and also at this place, spent Tuesday and Wednesday in the city in the interest of the business here. He has had the petition in the com pany store which was closed last fall taken out and will conduct the busi ness as it was originally, in both store rooms. This change gives the store a more up-to-date and business like appearance. Mr. Anderson will spend about two days iu the week here. YOU CAN FOOL all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time. The Battery has been established in Gaffney four years, and each year shows an increase in patronage and business. It is true that each succeeding year finds us better equipped for business, with a larger and a more varied stock.
