ROOSEVELT NAMES DEMOCRAT.
President Tenders Hon. Carter Tate
Office of District Attorney.
Washington, March 8.—Attorney
General Moody stated on Tuesday
that he had, on behalf of the presi
dent tendered to Hon. Carter Tate the
office of district attorney of the north
ern district of Georgia, now held by
Hon. Edgar Angler. The place comes
to him entirely unsolicited.
Coming as it does, Mr. Tate’s friends
here see no reason why he should not
accept it. It comes solely as the re
sult of the personal admiration of
President Roosevelt for him, and of
his close personal friendship with At
torney General Moody and Secretary
of Commerce Metcalf, both of whom
served in congress with him.
Air. Tate took the matter under ad
visement. His close friends have
strongly urged him to accept the place,
coming as it does, to him entirely with
out any suggestion of solicitation ou
his part, and without involving in the
least his own politics.
It is believed Mr. Tate will accept.
This appointment is regarded here
as in line with the president’s deter
mination to place in the district at
toriifeyships throughout the country
men who public careers have demon
strated their ability to be of positive
assistance in carrying out his policy
of making effective the laws against
trusts and monopolies. It is his pur
pose to see that officials of the tfepart-
ment of justice, especially district at-
torn< ys are aggressive in using tht
power of their offices to this end.
BAD SCARE IN FLORENCE.
SENATE HAS SHORT SESSION.
Presic’ent Roosevelt Sends Important
Nominations to that Body.
Washing!<:n, March 8.—The senate
was in open s< ssion only five minutes
today. As soon as the journal was
approved Mr. Blackburn introduced a
resolution asking the secretary of
state to re-open the claim of A. H.
Lazarus, against tho Republic of Chile.
It was referred to the committee on
foreign relations. The senate at 12:05
went into < xecutive session.
The president today sent to the sen
ate the following nominations:
First assistant postmaster general,
Frank H. Hitchcock, Massachusetts.
Third secretary of embassy, John
W. Garrett, Maryland, at St. Peters
burg.
Secretary oj the legation, Roger
Sherman Gates Boutelle, of Illinois, at

Presense of a Petit Juror in the Court
Room Causes Panic.
Florence, March 7.—The United
States Court convened here this mor
ning at 10 o’clock with the Hon. Judge
Brawley presiding and Clerks Murphy,
of the Circuit Court, and Houston, of
♦ he District Court, in their places.
Shortly after the court had been or
ganized for work there was almost a
stampede in the court room when it
was announced that one of the petit
jurors, a resident of an up-country
town, was in the court room with a
ease of smallpox. In short order the
above mentioned juror found himself
alone in possession of the court room,
for Judge Brawley had the court im
mediately adjourned and tho attaches
and others interested in the court held
a consultation in the yard of the court
house, when it was decided to hold
the court in the city hall.
After finding that it was impraetie-
able to have the attendants upon court
mingle together again, Judge Brawley
adjourned the court sine die.
The hoard of health, as soon as it
was informed of the visitor having
smallpox, took immediate charge and
had the man removed to the pest
house, where he is now under medical
treatment.
Judge Brawly, by request of W. F.
Clayton, a member of the local bar
and chairman of the citizens’ com
mittee on court house building, vis
ited the office of Mr. Joseph Seay, su
pervisor of construction of the court
house building, today and examined
the plans of the new building that is
now in course of construction. He
expressed himself as being highly
pleased with the plans.
A Prayer.
A broken heart, my God, my King,
Is all the sacrifice I bring;
The God of grace will ne’er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice.
My soul is humbled In the dust,
And owns Thy dreadful sentence just;
Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye
And save the soul condemned to die.
Then will I teach the world Thy ways,
Sinners shall learn Thy sovereign
grace;
I’ll lead them to my Saviour’s blood.
And they shall praise a pardoning
God.
O, may Thy love inspire my tongue!
Salvation shall he all my song;
And all my powers shall join to bless
The Lord, my strength and righteous
ness.

From the Y. M. C. A. Building in Spar
tanburg Tuesday Night.
Spartanburg, March 8.—While he
was in bathing at the Y. M. C .A. bath
rooms in this city Tuesday evening,
and his coat and vest were haaging
in the dressing room a short distance
away. Mr. J. F. Laughridgc was rob
bed of his gold watch and chain, which
were in his vest pocket. The watch
is a double ease, seven jewel, Wal
tham time* piece, valued at $25. To
the chain, which is also of gold, is
appended a charm, on one sid<* of
which is engraved the emblems of the
Odd Fellows and on the reverse side
those of the Red Men.
Mr. Laugh ridge has suspected some
one of tb<* theft—a youth named
liowry, who up to yesterday was
rooming in the building. Lowry lias
not been seen or heard from since the
night of the* robbery; and he was seen
in the building at the time the owner
of the watch was bathing. He came
to Spartanburg and engaged lodging in
the building about five days ago. He
was employed for a brief period at
one of the eating houses; but was
doing nothing prior to his sudden de
parture last night. He kept a dress
suit case in his room. Lowry told
some people he was from Asheville,
others that he was from Chattanooga,
and still others he came from Virgin
ia. He is a clean shaven, round faced
youth, and dressed very natty, wear
ing gray clothes and a gray cap. His
manners were affable.
Last night Mr. Laughridgc and Mr.
Tom Brannon went to the Y. M. C. A.
together to get a hath. Each pulled
off his coat and vest and hung them
up in the dressing room and each left
a watch in his vest pocket. The watch
and chain of Mr. Brannon was not
disturbed. During the time he was in
the bath room Mr. Laughridgc heard
some one enter the dressing room,
near by, and thinking it was some one*
In* knew he pulled open the door to
his bathing apartment and saw the
young man Lowry, who went to the
mirror in the room and began brushing
his hair. Mr. Laugridge thought no
more of the incident until he missed
his watch, about fifteen minutes af
terwards.
