R. A. Jones is having his residence on
Frederick street remodeled and repainted,
which adds very much to its appearance,
as well as its convenience.
Paul Morgan is making airangements
to install a bath room in connection with
his laundry where the male element of
the c ty may get rid of some of their
“real estate’’ at so much per month.
The Gaffney Hardware Company is
opening up its new stock in the building
formerly occupied by W. V. Humphries
& Co., on Limestone street, and will
I soon be ready for business.
Mrs. J. N. Lipscomb has returned from
I Fair Forest, where she was called last
week by the critical illness of her father.
We are glad to know that he wjus
much (better when she left him, and
that he is still improving.
Accidentally Killed.
News reached the city Wednesday that
a son of Mr. Burl Jolly, who lives a few
miles above the city, bad accidentally
shot himself and died instantly from his
wound. The young man was out hunt
ing, or in the woods, and, it is said, was
poking the stock of his gun into some
bushes, when in pulling it out, with the
muzzle toward him, the hammer caught
against a limb and the gun was discharg
ed, the load tearing away some of the
fingers of his right hand and entering his
throat and chest causing his death.
Tiie accicent was a deplorable one, and
the young man’s parents have the sympa
thy of their entire neighborhood in their
trouble.
Arreated for Blgaiey.
J. J Porter, who has been running a
restaurant here, was arrested this week
by Sheriff Thomas at the request of the
sheriff of Anderson, where he is wanted
for bigamy. He was locked up here until
Wednesday when a deputy from Ander
son came over and carried him back to
that city.
Porter, it seems, didn’t deny his guilt,
and wife No. 2, who was here with him,
said she was married to him and that they
had been living together about five years.
Wife No. 1 lives at Anderson, and she
was the cue who swore out the warrant.
The Lipscomb Reunion.
The Lipscomb reunion, which had been
arranged for Wednesday, was held on
that day at the old residence of Prof. W.
F. McArthur on Victoria avenue. About
thirty of the Lipscomb family were pres
ent, representing three generations, and
the gathering was a very enjoyable and
congenial one.
Excellent coffee and other refresh
ments were furnished in abundance, and
the time was most pleasantly spent in a
social way, talking over the incidents of
each others’ lives.
Free Library at Buffalo.
Miss Gus Brohawn has established a
free library at her school at Buffalo,
which contains many good and useful
books. Washington’s birthday was
observed at the school by appropriate ex
ercises, consisting of songs, recitations,
etc., all of which were well rendered by
the scholars participating. The patrons
of the school who attended were well
pleased with the manner in which their
children acquitted themselves, and the
progress they are making in their studies.
In the Mayor’* Court.
Mayor Gaffney had a gang of chronic
offenders before him Wednesday morn
ing in the familiar forms of Lige Brown,
Charles Reynolds, Will Agers. John Har
ris and Davis Petty, all colored sports,
whose propensity for courting the smiles
of the goddess Fortune is constantly get
ting them in trouble. Four of the
worst ones were retpiired to pay ten dol
lars in cash or thirty days’ labor to the
city streets; and the others were let off
with $2.50 or five days. The latter paid.

A Play at Limestone.
There will he a play at Limestone Col
lege this (Friday) evening, entitled “The
Deacon.’’ It will he under the manage
ment of the Cooper Literary Society, and
a small admission fee will he charged,
the proceeds of the entertainment to he
devoted to some worthy purpose in con
nection with the college.
Go down, hoys, and give the younq
ladies some “tangible assistance.”
At the Theatre.
The Crescent Comedy Company has
been playing in the Star Theatre every
night this week to pleased audiences.
The company is an excellent one and its
performances are clean, clever and full of
interest, and the increased patronage it is
receiving here each night attests its pop
ularity. Still, the patronage has not
been so good as it should be fc
a company.

Age for Road Tax.
Treasurer Gooding says that the act
recently passed by the legislature, chang
ing the age of those liable to road tax
from 18 to 21 yeais, does not go into
effect until next year, 1906.
