NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Wo continue to make inquiry of men
who are in position to know, and the
general response is to the effect that
the anti-dispensary law is the best
thing yet undertaken by the people of
Cherokee. There are some who do not
agree with this idea, but the great ma
jority with whom we have talked are
of the opinion expressed above.

Mr. CcCue was hanged last Friday.
He confessed to the crime, for which
we are heartily glad, as we had the
least bit of doubt as to his guilt. There
were others who shared this doubt
with us. and they, too, will be relieved.
It is awful to think of a State putting
to death an innocent man, but it is
a greater calamity for a State to set
free a red-handed murder, as has
been done in this State.

We make obeisance to the gentle
men of the House for the very prompt
and decisive manner in which they
killed Mr. Josh Ashley’s bill to abolish
the office of immigration commission
er. It is an evidence of good, hard
common sense. They are also to
be praised for their attitude toward
the dispensary. If the Senate isn’t
careful the House is going to carry off
the laurels for good legislation.

Another evidencee of returning san
ity in South Carolina was the convict
ion of Marion Parr for the murder of
Clarence Shealey at Columbia Satur
day. The murder was no less brutal
than some others that have taken
place in Richland county, but Parr was
a poor factory operative, without mon
ey or influence, and he must pay the
penalty for his crime. It is right that
he should be hanged for he murdered
Shealey for the purpose of robbery;
but if he had been a man of influence
it is a question as to whether he
would have been convicted of murder
in the first degree.

The legislature committee appointed
to examine the books of the State
house officials made a very nasty
showing for Secretary Gantt. Mr.
Gantt retaliates^'jth a, card to the
public, and m;^?^ slap at the chair
man of the committee—Sen. Butler,
of Cherokee. It appears to us that
what should concern Mr. Gantt is that
his own books are in bad shape and it

Gantt to get, himself straight before
he attempts to straighten others. Cer
tain it is that the public will give little
credence to anything Mr. Gantt might
say to condemn this committee—no
matter how much truth there might be
in it—until he exonerates himself from
suspicion by producing his books in
the proper shape in which they should
be kept by him. It’s a reflection on
him for his books to In* wrong, and
until they are right, and the public is
made aware of it, it will appear to the
most of us that pilfering has been go
ing on. Mr. Gantt is our personal
friend and we are sorry to see him in
this bad plight, but stealing is stealing
—when caught up with, and it makes
little difference who does the catching
—and you can’t make people believe a
man has been honest when his books
are several thousand dollars wrong.
Get your books right, Jessie, and then
publish your cards to the public.
