Italian Escaped Lut Is Soon Captured
by Police and Is Hurriedly Sent to
Jail to Escape the Wrath of an An
gry Mob.
New York, Jan. 18.—The custom of
an Italian baker to leave his heavy
delivery basket in the dark hallway
of an east side tegument while he de-
livered his wares through the house,
today, resulted in a quarrel in which
Pasquale Totoriello, aged 45, was killed
and his niece, Mrs. Maria Toloriel-
lo, aged 30, so badly wounded that she
will probably not recover.
Both victims were stabbed. Mrs.
Tolorieilo identified the baker, Salva
tore Ferrari as the man who killed her
uncle and caused hoiynvn injuries. He
was captured a few minutes after the
stabbing after a short, sharp chase by
the police.
The baker had disregarded frequent
warnings not to leave the basket in
the hallway, where any one passing
through would fall over it in the dark
ness. When the janitor himself fell
over the basket today he decided tc
have the matter settled.
A quarrel followed, and Toioriello
and his niece with io the janitor’s as
sistance.
When Ferrari was captured a few
minutes later and brought back to Uie
tenement house for identification, the
officers and their prisoner were sur
rounded by an angry mol), and the po
licemen had to fight their way out.

tion of President Roosevelt’s visit to

Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, Is making
elaborate preparations. Avery’s is
land is one of the finest duck hunt
ing places in the south, tfnd President
Roosevelt will spend two or three days
there.
The Mcllhenny place is a noted
southern plantation home of antebel
lum architecture, wit-h wide verandas
and large oak trees. Mr. Mcllhen-
ny’s and sisters, who entertained Miss
Alice Roosevelt at the Mardi Gras two
years ago, will receive the president.

fixed.
Hearing Given Ex-Postmaster.
Valdosta, Ga., Jan. 18.—Deputy Unit
ed States Marshal Goodwin returned
today from Brunswick, where he car
ried Gilbeft Meeks, the alleged de
faulting postmaster at Nichols, for a
commitment trial. Meeks was arrest
ed at Offerman, Saturday, without any
trouble and he and the officer w T ent
at once to Brunswick. The commib
ment trial was held before Commis
sioner Dunwoody and. Meek’s bond
was fixed at $2,500. His alleged short
age is said to have been $2,090. Thfl
report sent out from Douglas in re
gard to the bondsmen having settled
the matter seems to have been in cor
rect. They may pay the alleged short
age, but it is doubtful if they will bfl
able to stop the criminal proceedings
against Mr. Meeks.

President Loubet Will Begin To Get
New Members at Once.
Paris, Jan. 18.—The Combes minis
try presented its resignation to Pres
ident Loubet at the Elysee palace this
morning, and the president accepted
it, but asked the ministers indiviidual-
ly to carry on their functions until a
new cabinet is formed.
M. Loubet will begin the considera-,
tion of the formation of a new cabi
net this afternoon. He has summoned '
th« president of the senate, M. Fal-
lieres, and the president of the cham
ber of deputies, Paul Doumer, to tha
Elysee for conferences. These con-
feiences will determine whom M. Lou
bet will invite to form a ministry. M.
Rouvier continues to occupy the first
place, but his chances are less cer
tain that of first, owing to the belie!
that a Rouvier cabinet would not last
long on account of the international
divisions of the parliamentaary groups.
