New York, Jan. 18.—The custom of an Italian baker to leave his heavy delivery basket in the dark hallway of an east side tegument while he de- livered his wares through the house, today, resulted in a quarrel in which Pasquale Totoriello, aged 45, was killed and his niece, Mrs. Maria Toloriel- lo, aged 30, so badly wounded that she will probably not recover. Both victims were stabbed. Mrs. Tolorieilo identified the baker, Salva tore Ferrari as the man who killed her uncle and caused hoiynvn injuries. He was captured a few minutes after the stabbing after a short, sharp chase by the police. The baker had disregarded frequent warnings not to leave the basket in the hallway, where any one passing through would fall over it in the dark ness. When the janitor himself fell over the basket today he decided tc have the matter settled. A quarrel followed, and Toioriello and his niece with io the janitor’s as sistance. When Ferrari was captured a few minutes later and brought back to Uie tenement house for identification, the officers and their prisoner were sur rounded by an angry mol), and the po licemen had to fight their way out. PRESIDENT TO HUNT DUCK. Will Be Guest at Joe Jefferson’s Fa mous Island Camp. New Orleans, Jan. 18.—In anticipa tion of President Roosevelt’s visit to Avery’s island, Joseph Jefferson’s fa mous hunting and fishing camp, John Mcllhenny, former lieutenant in Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, Is making elaborate preparations. Avery’s is land is one of the finest duck hunt ing places in the south, tfnd President Roosevelt will spend two or three days there. The Mcllhenny place is a noted southern plantation home of antebel lum architecture, wit-h wide verandas and large oak trees. Mr. Mcllhen- ny’s and sisters, who entertained Miss Alice Roosevelt at the Mardi Gras two years ago, will receive the president. The date of his arrival has not been fixed. Hearing Given Ex-Postmaster. Valdosta, Ga., Jan. 18.—Deputy Unit ed States Marshal Goodwin returned today from Brunswick, where he car ried Gilbeft Meeks, the alleged de faulting postmaster at Nichols, for a commitment trial. Meeks was arrest ed at Offerman, Saturday, without any trouble and he and the officer w T ent at once to Brunswick. The commib ment trial was held before Commis sioner Dunwoody and. Meek’s bond was fixed at $2,500. His alleged short age is said to have been $2,090. Thfl report sent out from Douglas in re gard to the bondsmen having settled the matter seems to have been in cor rect. President Loubet Will Begin To Get New Members at Once. Paris, Jan. 18.—The Combes minis try presented its resignation to Pres ident Loubet at the Elysee palace this morning, and the president accepted it, but asked the ministers indiviidual- ly to carry on their functions until a new cabinet is formed. M. Loubet will begin the considera-, tion of the formation of a new cabi net this afternoon. He has summoned ' th« president of the senate, M. Fal- lieres, and the president of the cham ber of deputies, Paul Doumer, to tha Elysee for conferences. These con- feiences will determine whom M. Lou bet will invite to form a ministry. M. Rouvier continues to occupy the first place, but his chances are less cer tain that of first, owing to the belie! that a Rouvier cabinet would not last long on account of the international divisions of the parliamentaary groups. New Companies In Chile. New York, Jan. 18.—During last year, says a Herald dispatch from Val paraiso de Chile, 59 mine, agricul tural and nitrate banking companies have been incorporated with a total capital of about $30,000,000. Sever al foreign firms with $8,000,000 capi tal, were also formed. Commercial and industrial enterprises of all kinds, representing huundreds of millions, j continue to be organized. Nitrate ex- 1 ports and customs receipts show large increases. Contest Filed Against Adams. Denver, Colo., Jan. 18.—At a join!' session of the two houses of the gener-! al assembly Tuesday afternoon to taka action on the contest filed by James H. Peabody for the office of governor, the request of the attorneys for Gov ernor Adams for an extension until 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon of the time to submit an answer to charges made in the papers, was granted by a vote of 61 to 34. By the same vote the legislature decided to proceed at once with the taking of testimony in the contest. Postmistress in Jail. New Haven, Jan. 18.—Margaret A Toomey, formerly postmaster at Leete Island, was bound over to the United States court on a charge of embezzle ment after a hearing before United States Commissioner William A Wright. She went to Jail in default of bonds of $1,000. It Is alleged that Mrs. Toomey’s office accounts weri found to be short to the extent of $650 . Miami, Fla., Jan. 18.—The Spanisi berk El Victoria, with a crew of Id men from Tampico, Mexico, to Fen naudina, Fla., went ashore near Palm Beach yesterday afternooa. Macon, Ga., Jan. 18.—A movement is said to be on foot by the American Mining Co., to bring a large colony of Italian laborers to this section to work in the Kaolin mines at Dry Branch. The owners of the mines have become so displeased with the shfitlessness and unreliability of the negro laborers that It has been de cided to resort to immigration of the Italian. The experiment will be watched with a great deal of interest. Negro Woman Kills Husband. Tlfton, Ga., Jan. 18.—Nancy Camp bell, a negro woman living near Nash ville, Ga., shot and kilted her husband, Alex Campbell, last night. She emp tied a 38-caliber Smith and Wesson gun three balls striking Alex, one tak Ing effect in the head, another in the neck and ohe in the left leg. The woman has been arrested and is in Nashville jail. She claims that it was an accident. The coroner’s ver dict was that of murder. Knighthood Conferred on Man. San Francisco, Jan. 18 —King Chris tian, of Denmark, has conferred the title of knight upori*H. H. Birkholm, a San Franciscan, who for ten years has represented the Danish govern ment as consul general to California. Oregon and Washington. Robert Saxon, aged 76, one of thl atriking mill operatives of Fall River, was found frozen to death on thl railroad track near Plainfield, Conn. Burkett for United States senator Ambassador Azpiroz, of Mexico and Secretary Hay today signed an arbitra tion treaty along the lines of similal documents recently negotiated witt other countries. The Idaho legislature has appointed a committee to consider the advisabil ity of having a statue of the late Sen ator Shoup placed in statuary hall al the national capitol. Mrs. Lewis Cass Ledyard, of Neu York and Newport, Is dead at her res idence in New- York from heart di» ease. She was the wife of the well known yacht man and former commo dore of the New York Yacht club. Fire early today entirely destroyed the McKay carriage works and for a time threatened the business portloi of Grove City, Pa. The loss is aboul $66,000. Partially covered by inpur ance. One hundred men are thrown out of employment. Andrew Nelson, aged 20, a farm hand, of Norfolk. Neb., -entered th« room of Miss Carrie Jacobson, 19 years old, while she slept early in the morn ing and blew off her head with a shot gun. He then shot himself, dying in stautly.
