Magistrate Bridges has married six teen couples since he was appointed to office. E. R. Cash shipped six crates of his poultry to the Poultry Association at Charlotte Monday for exhibition. There will be the usual prayer meet ing at Buford Street Methodist church tomorrow (Wednesday) evening, at 7:30 o’clock. » There was quite a large crowd in the city Saturday, the largest that has been here since Christmas. Good or der prevailed. • Bolivar Carson, a young man of Yorkville and a brother of J. F. Car- son of this city, has accepted a posi tion as salesman with the Company store. Cephas Littljeohn and Jud Allen, colored boys about grown, were tried by Magistrate G. W. Speer Friday for stealing chickens. They were both .sentfmeed to thirty days on the chain- gang. W. J. Sentel was the prose cutor. J. R. Graham, the night operator at the Southern, had the end of his middle finger of his right hand mashed into a pulp Wednesday morning about 3 o’clock while assisting the agent to load some heavy trunks. Dr. B. L. Allen treated the wound. Thos. Hester returned to Tazewell, Va., Friday. He shipped seven mules and two wagons the same day by freight to the same point. J. J. Par ris left on same train with the animals to look after them and expects to re main in Virginia a year on the rail road work with Mr. Hester. C. C. Guthrie, who was born near Cherokee, in this county, but was reared up near Lincolnton, N. C., and moved to Wisconsin in 1805, returned to Lincoln county the latter part of November to visit his relatives and friends. He is now in the city under a course of electrical treatment by Dr. B. L. Allen. Mr. Henderson Carroll, one of the oldest .and most substantial farmers of the King’s Creek section, was in the city Saturday on business. When asked if the low prices caught him with any cotton on hand, he replied that he had fifty or sixty bales on hand yet, but could hold it until the prices suited him. Cotton Growers Meeting. I here was a second meeting of the cotton growers of Cherokee county last Saturday. . At this meeting a perma nent organization was effected. R. C. Sarratt was elected president. Rev. J. B. Wilson, vice-president, S. F. Par rott, secretary, W. F. McArthur, treas urer. W. Sam Lipscomb was elected as a delegate to attend the Cotton Grow ers’ Association, which meets in New Orleans the 24th of this month. J. V. Sarratt made a motion to re duce the acreage of the present crop of cotton and the amount of fertilizers heretofore used 25 per cent. R. A. Jones offered an amendment to Mr. Sarratt’s motion, not to use any ferti lizers this year at ruling prices. This motion was adopted. Rev. J. B. Wilson and G. W. Bon ner were appointed to co-operate with Mr. W. Sam Lipscomb as soon as he returns from New Orlens in adopting by-laws by which the county organiza tion should be governed. The chairman was authorized to call a meeting of the county organization after the delegate returns from New Orleans. About 300 farmers and business men attended the meeting Saturday. Report of Graded School No. 2. Last Friday ended the first session of the graded schools of the town of Gaffney. Prof. F. E. Shuford, principal of graded school No. 2, for the informa tion of his patrons, hands us the fol lowing itemized report of the school for the closing session: Entire enrollment, 301; greatest in its history. Enrollment of different grades is: First grade, 130: second and third combined, 101; higher grades, 70. Average attendance for the entire school. 150. T lis is indeed a fine record for this school under the management of Prof. Shuf >rd and his able assistants. He requests that all pupils enter ing fi -st grade should enter at once, as no one who has never been to school will be allowed to enter first grade after school has advanced. NOTICE. Ln^t Friday night Mr. Forest Pen nington and Miss Lula Petty, and Mr. Ja iper Richards and Miss Honor Petty were married at the residence of Mag istrate C. T. Bridges, in this city. Abo on Saturday night Mr. Jas. Powell and Miss Pearle Camp were married at Magistrate Bridges’ residence, Mag istrate Bridges officiating in all throe. Quite a crowd attended these wed dings and witnessed the happy couples launched on the sea of matrimony, and wished them much happiness in their future. MONEY TO LOAN. Crosses of Honor upon some of the Confederate veterans on next Thursday, 19th inst. The meeting will be at the courthouse at 2 o’clock in the afternoon; and the program will be: Reading rules. Presentation of crosses. Address by Prof. H. P. Griffith. Death of a Lady. Mrs. Eramaline Byars died last Wed nesday about 10 o’clock. She was about fifty-five years old at the time of her death. The burial and funeral took place at the home graveyard Fri day. Rev. Jack Bonner officiated. Mrs. Byers was the mother of twelve children—eight living and four dead. Otts says he has the committee appointments that he wanted. He is on the judici ary committee, and on military affairs —the former the most important of all, and quite an honor, he says, to Cherokee county. He and Mr. Kirby have drawn good seats, and he thinks the house will soon "get down to busi ness.” A man has a very treacherous mem ory when there is going to be a morn ing after.
