is like a Are, the sooner you combat
It the better your chances are to over
power It. But few mothers in this
age are willing to do the necessary
work #equired to give a good old-fash

would be administered by their grand-
mothers, backed by Boschee’s Ger

ally used in connection with the home
treatment of colds and is still In
greater household favor than any
known remedy. But even without the
application of the old-fashioned aids
German Syrup will cure a severe cold

the congested organs, allays the irri

cough. Any child will take It. It Is
invaluable in a household of children.

Several Hundred Thousand Dollars’
Worth of Property Destroyed in Ohio
City, While the Metropolitan Club
House Is Destroyed.
i
Columbus, O., Dec. 21.—Fire early
today on HiglT street, near Broad, de
stroyed $225,000 worth of property and
stocks in the center of the business
district and in an explosion during the j
fire five firemen were more or less in-1
jured.
The fire started in the Mithoff build
ing on the second fio<jr in the rear of
the First National bank. The second,
third and fourth floors were occupied
as flats and something like 13 families
reside there, hut all were rescued.
The fire then spread into the stores
of Krauss, Butler & Benham Co., the j
largest carpet and rug dealers in Ohio, j
In the rear of the store were stored '
thousands of dollars’ worth of mat
tings and other highly inflammable
material, and C ' fire went into this
and destroyed it as so much tinder.
Ten engines were put to work and
were unable to get control of the
flames, and every engine in the city
was called out.
The fire spread into the building ad.
joining, occupied by the Wheeler gro
cery. In this case it was almost im
possible to cope with the flames as
they were on the top floor and in the
rear, away from high stand and alley
along the Mithoff building.
The firemen carried the hose into
the fourth floor of the new First Na
tional bank building and flooded the
Mithoff and Wheeler buildings.
Shortly after the flames had eaten
their way to the front of the Mithoff
building the firemen from No. 3 house
entered and worked on the second
floor. Suddenly there was an explo
sion of gas, and the second floor went
down. Firemen Durkin, Owens, Me-
Avoy, Hermann and Freich were in
jured, hut not seriously.
The 5-story Mithoff buildig was com
pletely gutted. The fire was next to
the new 8-story First National bank
building, but it escaped damage.
