A SLOW STENOGRAPHER.
Trenton. S. t'.. Nov. 20. 1904. ;
Ed. H. DeCamp,
Gaffney, S. C.
Dear Sir The hundred copies of
Th ■ Gaffney Ledger, have turned up
at last. They were sent to Edgefield)
which is six miles away from Tren
ton.
1 inclose check for $2.00 to pay for
them. I note that in your introduc
tion to
ed it.
it would have been unintelligible, be
cause the setnograper was too slow
to keep tip and get all that I said.
While you would seem to intimate
that I changed my language, a mo
ment'.^ reflection will show you that
1 con’.: have had no motive, but I sup
pose you can n t help being preju
diced. and 1 will let it go at that.
i hope you will keep tab on the jug
and demijohn trade and publish
statistics, from your express office.
Yours truly,
B. R. Tillman.
The Ledger has no controversy
with Senator Tillman. He favored
the dispensary; we opposed it. The
people sustained our opposition and
wo are satisfied. We stated a plain
truth, nothing more, nothing less,
when we said the Senator edited the
copy of his speech. Acting upon the
suggestion of Senator Tillman we
called at the express office Saturday
and inquired of Mr. Fisher as to the
difference in shipments. He informed
us that the average was about twenty-
five gallons a day; that the increase
was about three hundred per cent
over what it was before the dispen
sary was closed. Mr. Fisher was not
prepared to compare figures with the
same time last year, as he came here
this year and <fid not have the records.
We know this is not a very credit-
able showing, but still there is a
marked decrease in the use of intoxi
cants by the people of Cherokee. It
must l)e borne in mind that this is the
holiday season; that the dispensary
was closed on short notice and no
one had time to lay in a supply. We
firmly believe that the shipments will
decrease after the holidays. It’s
new! There is a novelty about it for
some, and when the novelty wears off,
there will be a vast difference.
In this connection we may say that
it has been hinted to us that the ex
press agent has been encouraging the
shipment of liquor; that he is agent
not only for the express company, but
for some whiskey house. We don’t
want to believe it„ for we have thought
Mr. Fisher was too much of a gentle
man for anything of that kind, but we
must say that things look suspicious.
When the legislature meets an ef
fort will.he made to make the law
more effective by offering amend
ments to change it.
We are not in the habit of throwing
boquets. hut we desire to add a word
of commendation to the city and coun
ty officials for the efforts they have
put forth to enforce the law. Chief
of F’olice Lockhart and bis men and
Sheriff Thomas and li's deputies are
doing their duty. They should be
encouraged in their efforts by every
good citizen and The Ledger, for one,
takes off its hat to them for the manly
manner in which they are working.
We repeat that conditions are not
what we would like them to be - but
there is such a vast improvement
over the former state of affairs that
we fee) greatly encouraged.
is either ignorant of what it is talking
about when it says “108 gallons of
booze was recently counted going in
to Cherokee on one express car,” or
the express agent at this point does
not tel! the truth. But suppose it is
true, and that much should come
every day, it would then not be so
bad as the State dealing out the stuff.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The esteemed Gaffney Ledger says
it is satisfied with the attitude of the
Columbia State as to the dispensary,
although the State declines to say
whether or not it is opposed to the
dispensary, whether or not it is in
favor of prohibition or whethqAor not
it favors high license under Tlispen-
sary regulations. The State also care
fully refrains from attacking the dis
pensary in any definate way except
by a mild advory of the Brice bill.
The Ledger pays a' personal tribute
to the gentlemen who conduct the
State newspapers, who were formerly
the employers of the editor of The
Ledger, and who are no doubt very
excellent and honorable gentlemen,
and their subserviency to the dispen
sary is one of the alarming evidences
of the great, power and influence of
