NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Congress Is ifi session, anl the
world moves on just the same. The
threatened reduction in the represen
talion from the South has frightened
no one and will doubtless prove noth
ing more than an avenue of escape for
the pent-up gas of some of our repub
Mean friends.

Wo are still open to receive sub
scriptions to the Thornwell Orphan
age. We regret we have no new
acknowledgments to make since our
last issue. Our people would do credit
to themselves to deal with a more
generous hand toward this worthy in
stitution. It is eniirely undenomina
tional and deserves the support of
every good man and woman. ,
• » •
There is no denying the fact that a
good deal of whiskey is being shipped
to Gaffney every day—far too much
for the good of the people—but, at the
same time, there is no one at all ac
quainted with the state of affairs be
fore and since the abolishment of the
dispensary but who will admit that
there is a decided improvement in the
sobriety of our people. We have re
moved the temptation to get drunk,
and that is a good deal.

The Ledger yesterday delivered to
Mr. Gettys the ton of guano for the
best acre of upland corn raised in
Cherokee county this year. The yield
was a most remarkable one, seventy-
six and one-half bushels. His experi
ence goes to show what can be done
on one acre of our land. Mr. Gettys
informs us that he will make clear of
all expenses about $30 on this one
acre of corn. In addition he gets the
ton of guano. This beats cotton farm
ing. even at 10c a pound.

The Spartanburg Journal of Friday
says:
Our esteemed friend, the Gaffney
Ledger, does not like to be called a
“Stateling” because it prematurely
endorsed the position of the Columbia
State as to the dispensary, and says:
We wish to say frankly that it was
unworthy of Mr. Henry and we can
not account for it on any other hy
pothesis than that he has allowed his
temper to assert itself.
No hypothesis is required. The ed
itor of this paper has not lost his tem
per, is entirely calm and self-pos
sessed, knows what he is doing and
means what he says. If The Ledger
will find out what the Columbia
State’s position as to the dispensary
is, before endorsing it and will espe
cially note the p jrsistent refusal of the
State to give answer to our direct in
quiries as to what its position is, The
Ledger will be able to give a more in
telligent opinion on the subject.
We do not consider that we pre
maturely endorsed the position of The
State. We judged by its utterances
that it was opposed to the dispensary
just as we Judged by the utterances
of The Journal during the recent
campaign that is was opposed to Par
ker for president. If The Journal
knows that The State is favoring the
dispensary because of anything The
State has said in behalf of that
“great” (?) Institution, we must con
fess it is a closer reader of The State
than we are. We flatter ourself that
we are something of a Judge of hu
manity and we decline to believe that
The State, its president or its editor,
could be influenced to support the dis
pensary for a monetary consideration.
If The Journal knows such to be the
case we would like for it to say so.
We have, at different times, had our
faith in humanity badly shaken and
we should indeed be shocked almost
beyond recovery were we to be con
vinced that A. E. or W. E. Gonzales
could be influenced to support any
thing or anybody because of a mone
tary consideration. The Journal may
.think we say this to "bask in the sun
shine" of The State’s favor, but we
do not. We say it because we believe
these men to be incapable of being
corrupted by money, and we judge
this because of the hardships they
have passed through which they
might have avoided had they yielded
to the “power on the throne.”
Death of a Child.
The eight-'en-months-old child of
Mr. ui.d Mrs. T. S. Halley died Thurs
day about 10 o’clock, after an illness
of about five weeks. It was buried
at Corinth church Friday.
Not a Single Case!!
There was not a single case of any
kkul before the mayor yesterday
morning! How is that for "improve
ment?”

W E feel very grateful to the citizens of Cherokee County for favoring us
with their trade during the years 1902, 1903 and 1904; also we have
every reason to believe that they are all well pleased with the Pianos,
