New York, Dec. 7.—That the credi tors of Mrs. Ca*sie L. Chadwick, as represented by the Ohio men who ar rived in New York yesterday, are more anxious to bring about a settlement of their claims against the woman than to precipitate a crises by a sen sational legal step, is believed by Mrs. Chadwick's local attorneys. They think this has been shown by the many con ferences yesterday without apparent result. It is pointed out also that no other than a hope that it is not yet too late to secure a cash settlement of the claims against Mrs. Chadwick explains the delay in submitting to Andrew Carnegie the notes held by the Gberlin (Ohio) bank for his deci sion, whether the signature thereon is genuine. Attorney Andre*w Squiro, counsel for treasurer 11 1 Reynolds, of the Wade Park bank of Cleveland, is quoted to. day as saying: “I am in this city representing sev eral creditors. All that I am looking for is the cash.’’ It is intimated that the purpose ol Mr. Reynold’s trip to New York at the request of Mrs. Chadwick was to endeavor to raise the funds on th« Chadwick securities said to be worth $5,000,000, of which he is said to bfl trustee. Despite frequent conferences in this city yesterday and the sudden removal of Mrs. Chadwick to another hotel, which emphasized the fact that she is watched by two secret service officers, decisive action in the case seems to be held in alieyance by some epower- ful influence. It was reported today that the delay was, in a measure, due to a desire to prevent the imposition of hardship up on hanks which Mrs. Cfaadhrlolt has had dealings, but whose part ia her financial affairs has not yet been mads public. It is said that if it were known that other banka had mads loans to Mrs. Chadwick, a run on them might be started that would do them great injury. No one not Intimately connected with the case knows who these banks are nor what has become of a note-for $560,000 which President Beckwith, of the Oberlin bank, says he indorsed for Mrs. Chadwick. There was some anticipation that the return from Washington of F. F. Oldham, an attorney of the comptrol ler’s department, would be a signal for the presentation to Andrew Came gie, of the notes in question and that be might bring instructions from the comptroller of currency as to his pro csedur* in the Chadwiclc case. It wa« made clear last night that Mrs. Chadwick Is hieing closely watched by two secret service men who followed hsr from the Holland house to the New Amsterdam hotel, it yet remains to be ascertained who has assigned them to their task. There was some intimation today that the local authorities of Cleveland might step into the case and bring the case to an issue by ascertaining officially whether the disputed note* bear the signature of Andrew Carne gie. Movement on Foot to Help Farmers Get a Better Price. New Orleans, Dec. 7.—-Some strength was given to the cotton man ket today by a telegram to W. P. Brown from President Peters, of the Texas Cotton Growers’ association and other prominent Texas cotton men. The telegram said that a mass meet ing of cotton planters had been called in eVory county in Texas, Indian Ter ritory and Oklahoma to take place Dec. 17, tu devise ways and means to hold cotton. It was added that Tex as would hold hers. It was considered not improbable today that a meeting of the planters and country bankers in all the southern states growing cot ton would be held here about the date of the Texas meeting to consider means to meet the conditions imposed by the report of the bureau of agri culture. The market opened today about 6 points higher, January selling at 763, March at 7.75 and May 7.82. The advance continued during the forenoon. POSTMASTERS FOR THE SOUTH. Lovell, Obion; John Redd, Bolivar; William H. Hoi- linger, Waverly. Texas—Jacob M. Harrell, Manor. Touched Banks for Thousands. Macon, Ga., Dec. 7.—Maro W. Pot ter, a young man, who is cashier of banks at Davisboro, Gleawood and Hel- soft, Ga., has mysteriously disap peared and his books, which have been checked up by an expert, show a shortage of something Ifke 915,000. K is said that the amount may ex- osed 920,000, upon further examina tion. A feature'of the defalcation is that all of the alleged crookedness in the accounts seems to have been ac compli shed within ninety days before It was discovered, and the officials are wondering what disposition Potter made of the money in so short a time. In the course of a quarrsl in their country home a few months latsr Mrs. Hamilton stabbed a nurse, for whit i she was sentenced to two years in the Trenton penitentiary. Hamilton be gan an investigation which showed the woman’s connection with a band oi blackmailers and that shs had a hue band living. His marriage was at once dissolved, he abandoned his ca reer in this city and sought forgetful ness pn a Wyoming ranch.
