The books for the collection of State, county and Road Tax will be open Oct. 15, 1901, to Dec. 31, 1904, during which time no penalty will be added. Those who prefer may pay in Janu ary with 1 per cent, additional, or in February with 2 per cent, additional, or in March to the 15th of the month with 7 per cent, additional. After the 15th of March books are positively closed. Road tax may be paid during this time without penalty. Taxpayers owning property or pay ing taxes for others will please ask for tax receipts in each township in which property is owned. You must get a tax receipt for each township in which property is locat ed. Letters In reference to taxes must reach me not later than Dec. 26th. RUNAWAY MARRIAGE CAUSES TWO DEATHS CHARGED CRIMINAL ASSAULT. Father Refused Daughters Hand And Killing Follows. FATHER RUSHED TO SON’S AID Terrible Tragedy in Texas Over a Gret na Green Marriage—Step-Parent of Bride Hunts the Groom Down and Kills Him and His Father in Texas. Ft. Worth Tex., Nov. 30.—Last Sun- day Steve McKinney, a young farm er who had been paying attention to the step<l a lighter of J. M. Williams, near Alvarado, failing to win Wil* Ham’s consent to marriage, ran away with the girl and married her. This gre. tly enraged Williams, but yt ang McKinney and his bride return- ed home and the bridegroom went to work on his farm. Williams went to the town of Alva- redo and bought a winchester rifle. Then riding out to the field where the bridegroom, his father ami broth er were at work, the enraged man, without a word, opened fire. The older McKinney rushed to the rescue of his boy and himself was shot dbad. The brother, too, sought to shield his brother and father, but the crack of the rifle in Williams hand ended his effort. Steve McKinney and his father, D. V. McKinney lay dead in the field, the remaining son being desperately wounded. Officers have started to arrest Wil liams, and trouble is anticipated, as be is thoroughly desperate and craX - . over the escapade of the runaway. The bride is prostrated, and in a pitiable plight. All parties to the tragedy are re spectable and well-to-do farmers. Two Brothers Must Face Serious Ac cusation Brought by Cousin. Douglasville, Ga., Nov. 30.—Quite a sensation was made in the lower edg'e of this county a few days ago when Bob Hudson and Homer Hudson, two brothers, were arrested charged with criminally assaulting their first cousin, Miss Shaddix, who is abotA 18 years of age. Miss Shaddix claims that the two young men met her in the road and dragged her to the woods, where the crime was committed. The families of both parties are among the most prominent people of the county. The father of Miss Shad dix is a Baptist minister. The trial will come up in Douglas superior court next week. Negro Acquitted of Killing. Macon Ga., Nov. 30.—For killing the man who was shooting his son to death Matt Lundy, a negro living on Mr. J. B. Willis’ farm at Walden, was held justifiable in the superior court Tuesday. Matt had shot Robert Jones to death at a church sociable. Montgomery, Ala., Nov. 30.—The atate board of missions of Alabama Baptist church is in session at the Adams street Baptist church. George B. Miles, of Montgomery, is president of the board, and Rev. \V. B. Cramp- ton, secretary. It Is expected that $60,000 will be raised for the cause this year. The Baptist -state mission board appropriated $15,000 for mission work next year in Alabama, giving a large portion to the Birmingham district. The plan to employ a state evan gelist was approved. G. G. Miles, W. B. Davidson, all of Montgomery, were re flected president, secretary and re cording secretary, respectively. Chicago, Nov. 30.—Grin Cox, 17 years old, son of respectable parents ta Kensington, a suburb, has been sen tenced to life imprisonment in Judge Ohetlain’-s court on a charge of rob bery. The severe penalty was Inflict- ed because Cox when committing thd crime, was armed with a loaded revol ver. The crime for which he was convict ed was committed on Sept. 18. Cox emd two companions Ottered a Chi cago restaurant. Revolvers were dis played and the customers robbed un der threats of death. Report of Burea uon Cotton. Washington Nov. 30—The census bu* rea/u today issued a report by states and territories of the quantity of cot ton ginned from the growth of 1904 up to Nov. 14 showing that 29,611 gin neries had been operated this season up to that time, and -that these had ginned 9,906.057 running bales. Count Ing round bales as half bales, the num ber Is 9,786,646. Dentist’s Throat Cut by Uncle. Columbus, Ga., Nov. 30.—Dr. Clifl Duncan’s throat was cut Tuesday by Jim Ware, his uncle, at the Delicates sen, a Twelfth street saloon. At this hour his condition is very serious. Dr. Duncan, who is a prominent young dentist, had just come in on a train, and claims that as he entered the place he was attacked by Ware without prov ocation. Longshoremen on a Strike. Brunswick, Ga., Nov. 30.—Great In convenience and much possible trouble may result when the strike of the negro longshoremen for higher wages, which will soon come, is declared. They will strike for an Increase of 1 per cent an hour. The former strike of these negro longshoremen caused a very annoying tie-up of the shipping interests. To Locate New Industry. Mobile, Ala., Nov. 30.—B. 8. May nard, one of the proprietors of the Gerke Brewing company, of Cincinnati, who is In the south on business, will. In all probability, locate a branch es tablishment in New Orleans for the manufacture of malt extract. The weather Is more likely to agree with other people than with the gov ernment weather forecaster. Druggist Commits Suicide. Charlottesville, Va., Nov. 30.—Dr. R. O. Painkard, a druggist of Washing ton, D. C.. has committed suicide her* by swallowing carbolic acid. He was 68 years of age. Despondency 1c assigned as the cause. The Atlanta and Knoxville cham bers of commerce have extended to President Roosevelt an invitation to visit their cities. President Roosevelt today announced that Rear Admiral Charles Davis will be offered the appointment on the Dogger Bank court of inquiry. Young Corbett, champion light weight pugilist, was knocked out in ten rounds Tuesday night by a fighter named Nelson, at San Francisco. The offices of Price, Adams & Co., of New York, brokers, has been closed. No member of the firm or employes have appeared to make any explana tion. / William Bumbalough was shot and instantly killed jn White county, Ten nessee, by his son-in-law, John Ran dolph. A family quarrel was the cause of the tragedy. An indictment for murder In the firs j degree was returned today against Frank Felton, who is charged with shooting Guy Roach, Thanksgiving night in New York City.
