The voters of Cherokee have the opportunity today to say whether or not they desire to continue the. blight ing influences of the dispensary or the manhood of the county. * * • This is the last call we will make to the manhood of Cherokee. We be lieve the best that is in us will assert itself and that the rotten dispensary system is to be done away with. • • • Men may roam our streets and highways under the inlluence of whis key bought from a blind tiger, but as long as we have the open dispensary we presume that the whiskey was bought at that institution. Put the dispensary out of business and then we will the better be able to locate the tiger’s lair. • * * It were better to put up with a blind tiger that is afraid to come out from the jungle to prey upon the man- j f n " T " an) | hood of the comonwealth than cense the tiger to murder and wretched our people. Vote against the tiger in any shape. After we have voted out the licensed tiger, let every that cannot be put into words. When bedtime came I whispered to my wife that I wanted to sleep with him, as I used to do in childhood days. I could hear his deep breathing and I knew he was sound asleep, i think he must have dreamed about his boy and placed ids arm unconsciously about me. Memory got busy then, and I re called the first time I had ever seen my father to remember him. It was one night, in sixty-three or four, af ter the little family was all in bed. that old Rover gave an unusual bark, and my mother’s quick ear caught a familiar foot fall on the walk; and she was up like a flash. That will be a legal ballot. • * • Don’t beg the question. Go to the polls and exercise your right as an American citizen. If you want to and must do it, vote for “dispensary;” hut if you can possibly do it, vote “no dispensary.” By voting “no dispen sary” you vote for all that is pure and noble and good. By voting “dispen sary” you vote to perpetuate a system that is as rotten as hades. It remains for you to exercise your manhood. Do that which you think is best for your country, your wife, your mother, your children, your church and your self. Oh. Time, in your flight. And make mo a boy again. Just for one night.” And to mo the prayer of the poet was fully realized: I was just a child again, resting happily against my fa ther’s bosom! No wonder the tears came in that silent hour, and the henrt beat fast and the blood leaped and thrilled in my veins! Tillman’s Impropriety. | St George Expositor] We are glad that the Honorable Benjamin Ryan “pitch-fork” Tillman had the gall to accept the invitation of the few—for few it must have been —to deliver his stereotyped spiel at Gaffney on his off spring—the dispen sary. For, the conditions with which he was forced to contend were such that he was forced to admit the short comings of the great moral institu tion. At the same time, it is well known that Senator Tillman is In fa vor of the dispensary and would lend every effort for its advancement whenever given an opportunity. No one denies Senator Tillman’s right to accept the invitation extended to him by the dispensarites to visit Gaffney, but there are those who question the propriety of his doing ho. It was purely a local question, and one which in its discussion and de termination did not require an unu sual amount of brains. If the good people of Cherokee bad come to the conclusion that the dispensary was a Lad th'ng in their midst—an institu tion which increased crime and low ered morality, and that its abolish ment would purify the moral atmos phere and diminish crime, why then, we pronounce the interference of any outside person nothing short of sub limated audacity. The people of Cherokee will as sert their right at the ballot box on eighth instant, and we sincerely trust that Senator Tillman will learn that notvfltlfstanding he has been many times honored at the hands of the people of South Carolina, his dicta torial policy Is not approved. It were as unbecoming for Tillman—to em ploy a rather homely metaphor—to in vade Cherokee county, espousing the cause he did, as It were for him to advise In the domestic affairs of a family where he was not known and unbidden.
