The lore mayor held a reception at the town hall which was attended by all the leading bishops and clergy of tiie United Kingdom. Then Ihe pro cession lornied up and marched to the Cathedral. Large crowds gathered in the streets to whom several leading low churchmen, including followers of the late John Kensits’ son and the Wyckliffe preachers, an organization founded by the late Mr. Kensit, had previously distributed anti-ritualistic pamphlets. As the procession, headed by $he civic regalia and the corpora tion, followed by the bishops and cier. gy, in their robes, on foot, neared the Cathedral, the demonstrators began Li shout: “Down with popery!” “O, for another Luther!” When the venerable archbishop of York appeared, his silver cross of of fice held up before him, the crowd hooted and shrieked: "Traitors! It is popery in (he street! Send them to Home!" Amid a storm of hissing and shout ing the archbishop passed into the Cathedral unmoved by the uproar. A strong force of police was stationed about the building, the authorities fear ing more serious trouble. Formerly Secretary of the Department ci Commerce. Washington, Oct. 5.—President Roo- velt today formally designated First A.- i.tant Postmaster General Robert J. Wynne a;- acting pootmaster general. in succession to Mr. IViyne, George Bruce Cortelyou, formerly secretary of the deparment of commerce and labor and now chairman of the Repub lican committee, will become postmas. i ter general. Mr. Cortelvou's appointment as head of the postoffice department was i determined on several months ago by President Roosevelt, when Mr. Payne indicated to the president his desire to retire from the department on ac count of the precarious state of his health. Mr. Payne would have re signed the portfolio long ago had it not been for the pending investigation of the affairs of the department. He felt, however, and said many times to his friends that he could not relinquish | the duties of the office while the in vestigation was pending and expressed his determination to carry the investi gation to a conclusion. iFlie intense mental and physical strain incident to the direction of the postal inquiry very seriously under mined his strength. Biennial Convention Is Held at India napolis, Ind. Indianapolis, Oct. o.—The biennial convention of the National Republican j Li ague of tin- United States opened to day at the German bouse with Ha states and t* rritories represented b. delegations. According to Hb president, J. Hamp ton Moore, the league represents 2,000,- 000 members organized into 7,000 Re publican clubs. Charles McGuire, president of the In diana Lincoln league, called fhe con vention to order and introduced J. Hampton Moore, of Philadelphia, pres- j ident of the National League, who pre sided. The invocation was delivered by Dr. H. W. Kellogg, of the Central Avenue Methodist church, Indianapolis. Governor William Duroln, of Indiana formally welcomed the delegates to the state. The response was made on behalf of the convention by Sid B. Redding, of Arkansas, national treasurer. The call was road by E. W. Weeks, of Iowa, secretary of the National League, and the biennial address of President Moore was delivered. Postmaster General of the States Passes Away. Washington, Oct. 5.—Henry C. Payne, postmaster general of the Unit ed States, a member of th<; national Republican committee, a stalwart of his party, with the history of which both in his home, state and nationally he has been Identified for many years, died at his apartments at the Arlington hotel; aged Ml years. His death was announced in an offi cial bulletin issued by the attending physicians, which gave the cause ol death as disease of th emitral valve, dilation of the heart. Mr. Payne had been in poor health for at least two years, but his last illness covered only seven days, an at tack of heart trouble last week precipi tating the end at a time when, after a rest he seemed to have recovered a small measure of hts vitality impair ed by years of arduous labor. Death came after nearly six hours of unconsciousness. Funeral services will he held at St. Johns Episcopal church in this city Friday morning and by special train the remains will be taken to Milwau kee. Afealthy Emanuel County Man Strange ly Disappears. Swainsbortk Ga., Oct. 5.—fiascom Mulling, a prominent and wealthy young merchant and Haw mill man, who left his home at Summit, Ga., on the evening of Sept. 20, is still missing. It is said he was drinking at the time and carried with him $1,100. He left in a road cart and wont away with his working clothes on. He told hLs wife he would he hack that night. The theory spread that Mulling was murdered and searching parties were formed. Swamps have been scoured and creeks seined, but his disappear ance is yet folded in mystery. Nine negroes have been arrested, charged with his murder, and are now In Swainsboro Jail. Mulling was wealthy and stood well in Emanuel county. He carried $24,- 000 life insnrapee. Among Petitions Is Golden Foundry and Machine Company. Spartanburg, S. C., Oct. 5.—The Val ley Falls cotton mills, of this coun ty, operating 3,400 spindles and lOff looms, with a payroll of $2,000 pef month, has been placed in the hands of a receiver. G. K. Wilson, cashief of the Spartanburg Central National bank, was appointed receiver. Tim application was made by the company which is capitalized at $75,000. Among the petitioners are the Gold en Foundry and Machine company, ol Georgia. The petition was filed in tbfl United States court. The principal creditors of the mills are the firm ol Montgomery & Crawford, of this city. The mills Indebtedness Is said to b« nearly the amount of the capital stock, $75,000.
