In an eiderdown bag a woman In
Evanston, 111., sleeps every night out
of doors, says a Chicago dispatch. She
is Mrs. Martha Foote Crowe, dean of
women at Northwestern university
and head of Willard hall at that in
stitution.
“I am no convert to outdoor living,”
said Mrs. Crowe, ‘‘because I have al
ways been a believer in it. My sleep
bag? It is not extraordinary. It is
of denim, lined with an eiderdown
quilt. It Is really a bed that folds ;

Pupils Formed “Union” Wearing a
Badge and Hooted and Yelled Before
the School Building—Many Strikers

Ch’cago, Sept. 29.—Because of a mis
taken beliol that the assistant kinder
garten teacher just engaged for service |
in their school was a negress, 50 boys
stationed themselves as pickets around
the McAllister public school today
and prevented pupils from entering.
None of the pickets is more than 15
years of age.
Outside a crowd of 700 boys and
girls hooted and yelled at the teachers
looking from the windows of the
school building.
Every infant “striker” wore a badge
to show that he or she belonged to
a union.
Some of the badges were mostly
scraps of paper with the word “union”
scrawled aoross it. The others
wore “union” buttons which their
fathers had worn.

Boston. Sept. 28.—The preliminary
work of placing candidates in the field
for Ui eNovember election and choos
ing delegates to the various party con.
ventions was completed yesterday by
the Democrats in caucuses held
throughout the state.
The Republicans, however, divided
their caucuses following those held
in 22 cities with those in the other
11 cities and 120 towns today.
In many cities the election officers
found considerable difficulty in tabu
lating the votes/, which wore cast
under the new caucus law and the re.
turns in some of the districts word

hands on. This only illustrates that 1
am right in stating that the conse
quence of war is an apathy to the ques
tion of bloodshed and murder and
that it is certain to follow any long
continued strife.”
