DECREASE IN COTTON CROP. Fireman Was Killed, Engineer Seri ously Hurt and a Number of the Passengers Injured—Switch Had Been Tampered With. Alabtoon, 111., Sept. 21.—The Diamond special on the Illinois Central was wrecked at Barclay, 7 miles from here today: Thirteen coaches were derailed, but none of the passengers were killed, al though several were slightly injured. The fireman was killed and the engi neer seriously injured. On inspection it was shown that the switch could not be moved. Thb light was out and the lock was found in an adjoining field. The switch was in perfect order less than an hour previous. GENERAL STRIKE ORDER Life is a circus with many side shows Has Been Postporred by Naw York Building Trades Alliance. New York, Sept. 21.—Issuance of a general strike ultimatum to the em ployers by the unions in the building trades alliance here has been post poned. It. is said to have been pre sented today with the purpose of at tempting to end the lockout in force against the alliance unions. Many of the employers claim to be filling the places made vacant by the members of the alliance. A revolt has taken place in the plasterers’ union. About 400 men employed ex clusively in ornamental plastering withdrew and formed a union of their own. Part of the members returned to work at once, ignoring a strike or dered by the old union. Mississippi Crop, It Is Said, Will Not Exceed a Million Bales. Jackson, Miss., Sept. 21.—'Cotton crop experts are practically agreed in the statement that Mississippi’c cotton crop this year will not exceed 1,000,000 bales, as compared with 1,430.294 bales last year. The reduo tion is all the more marked on account of the fact that there was an increase of 12 per cent in the acreage this year, as compared with last year’s acreage. The crop will undoubtedly be th< smallest for years. In 1902 the yielc was 1,451,626 bales; in 1901 it was 1,275,439; in 1900 it was 1,055.000 bales, and in 1899 the crop was 1,264,000 bales. In many parts of the delta the dam age to the crop within the past sla weeks is placed at from 30 to 40 pel cent, and in some communities it ii almost total. The weekly government crop report for the state is as gloomy as usual in tone, and reiterates the reports o^ widespread damage to the crop frorr various sources, chiefly the boll worm* that are destroying the green bolls in immense quantities. A crop of less than 1,000,000 balet for Mississippi is a rarity, for such a thing has happened in but one in stance during the past dozen years. Healthy Mother*. Chicago, Sept. 21.—Orders for a general strike of the 300 dredgemen now employed in Boston harbor on government work have been issued by the Chicago headquarters of the Inter national Dredgemen’s union. The strike order was the result of the re fusal of the Boston dredge contrac tors to sign the wage scale and agree ment recently presented by the union. AT OYSTER BAY. Pet Hardman, of Athens, Victim of a Peculiar AccidenfT Athens, Ga., Sept. 21.—This morn ing a most peculiar accident befel! Pet Hardman, the 10-ye>ar-old son oi P. D. Hardman, a well known citizen of this place. The little boy had strayed off from his home, on Baxtei street, down into the bottom land! nearby, where there was a big can< field, and had become hidden, from view in the cane. The m*n at worn with the machine cutting down th« cane did not see him, and, in fact, had no idea he was anywhere near them. Suddenly, ae the machine cut it! way through the dense forage, a shrill scream of pain rang out, and the mas in charge of the machine, stopping hii mules, sprang down to see what wai the matter. He found the little boj lying by the side of the blade of th« machine, the blood spouting from I dozen ugly wounds on his right leg. C. President's Sojourn There to End on Thursday. Oyster Bay, L. I., Sept. 21.—Presi dent Roosevelt’s sojourn at Sagamore Hill will end tomorrow when he and his family will start for Washington. Early today the president and Mrs. Roosevelt took a long horseback ride, passing through the village of Oyster Bay on the way. Their neighbors and friends gave them a cordial reception, and waved a hearty farewell, the ride affording the occupants of the village the last opportunity of seeing the pres ident beforo election day. Collision of Freights On Central oi Georgia Railroad. Good water, Ala., Sept. 21.—A ba^ wreck occurred on the Central of Geor gia railway, 1 mile north of Goodwa ter, caused by a head-on collision. No 45 from Columbus to Birmingham, ii charge of Engineer Ward and Conduo tor Tom Bloodworth, collided witb No. 32 local freight, in charge of En gineer Truett and Conductor Jones. Both were freight trains, and the tw< engines were badly damaged, and foul or five cars were tom Into splinters The damage amounted to $10,000. C., Sept 21.—At an early hour Monday morning fire was discovered in the office of the secretary of state In the state capltol. The flames were confined to the on* office, and were quickly extinguished. None of the records were entirely destroyed, but a good many will have to be re- copied. The total loss ia estimated at about $2,500. Case Was Non Suited. Macon, Ga., Sept. 21.—As It appear ed to the court that there had been a lapse In the payment of premiums, the suit for $20,000 brought by Attorney Claud Estos for Mrs. Etta Hutson against the Prudential Life InsuraniM company was non-suited.
