the Gaffney market.
Sumter Littlejohn is building a
neat cottage on his lot on Limestone
street.
The work on the National Bank
building is not progressing so very
rapidly.
The days are warm, the nights are
cool, which makes ideal working
weather.
Zeb Robertson has put a cement
pavement in front of his new store.
Mr. Willis, the plasterer, did the
work.
Mr. and Airs. Ernest Cashion. for
merly of Blacksburg, who were re
cently married, are making their
home in Gaffney.
State Constable W. F. Moore took
a keg of cider out of a store here yes
terday and poured it out. He consid
ered it too strong.
Wm. Parris, a worthy young farm
er of Draytonville, has accepted a po
sition with W. J. Maness and will be
glad to have his friends call on him.

Forty hales of cotton were sold in
Gaffney Friday, and ninety were sold
Saturday. The highest price brought
Saturday was 10.55. The Gaffney
Manufacturing Company is taking

Ernest Peeler, who went to Atlanta,
Ga., some time ago to take a business
course in a business college there, has
completed his course and returned to
the city ana is now with the Cherokee
Commission Co.
Mr. and Mrs. James Darwin, of
Kings Creek, have moved to the city
and are occupying the Kelly cottage,
on Victoria Avenue. Their many
friends in the city are glad to have
them with us again.
There has been an R. F. D. route
established in this county with Wilk-
insville as headquarters, and is known
as Wilkinsville R. F. D. No. 1. Mr. i
Malcolm Lowry has the contract to
| carry the mail on it and is perform
ing his duties well.
The following young men of this
county have gone to Clemson College
for the coming session: Ed. Porter,
of Buffalo; Ralph Lemaster, of Wilk
insville; J. Furman Bolue, of Blacks
burg; Vernon Phillips, Vanderbilt
Kendrick and M. B. Sams, of Gaffney.
Fred A. Garvin, one of the county’s
best and brightest young men, has
the contract for carrying the mail on
R. F. D. Route No. 6. He Is in every
way worthy and capable, which as
sures the people on his route the host
service. He began his work Thurs
day.
The brick work on L. Baker’s Lime
stone street store was finished Fri
day. The carpenters, tiners and
plasterers are on it now and will soon 1
have it ready for occupancy. It has
been rented for three years by W. J.
Maness, who will move into it as soon |
as it is finished.
The baby of Mr. Wade F. Parker
died at the home of its father at
Cherokee Falls on the 10th inst. It
was one year and seven days old. Its
death leaves the home of the father
desolate. It occupied a place that
cannot be refilled. We extend sympa
thy to the bereaved.
Yesterday a short time after 12
o’clock, a negro passed Mr. Robt. God
frey’s house on North Frederick street
and snatched some clothing from the
piazza and made off with them. Chief
Lockhart was notified and he went
in immediate pursuit but the negro
eluded him and made his escape.
Little Bessie Thackston Crocker
celebrated her fourth anniversary on
Wednesday, September 14th, at the
home of her grandmother, Mrs. Isabel
Crocker. There were a number of
her little friends present, andthey
all enjoyed themselves highly and
feasted upon the good things which
the little hostess had for them.
State Constable W. F. Moore is on
the alert those days. Last Thursday
he took twelve gallons of cider and
eight gallons of phosphate from the
notorious Betsy Anderson nad poured
it out. On the same afternoon he ,
captured two gallons of stray whiskey j
and sent it to Columbia to lie mixed
with the “chemically pure” of the big
booze shop in that city.
Last Friday Gaffney was ahead in
the price paid for cotton, and there
is no reason why she should not re
main so through the season. The
mills of Cherokee county consume as
much cotton as we make and it looks
to us like the whole crop of the county
can be taken at home at top prices.
Last Friday cotton was selling at
Spartanburg for 10.25, at Cherokee for
10.25, at Union for 10.00, at Cliffside
for 10.40, and at Gaffney for 10.55.
Last Saturday evening about C
o’clock two negro boys who live with
Mr. Jas. Hill, on Capt. Chas. Petty’s
place, who had been hunting, were
handling a gun carelessly as they
were nearing their home and by some
means it was accidentally discharged
and the whole load of shot entered
the shoulder of one of them. The un
fortunate boy soon received medical
attention and was made as comfort
able as possible. Sunday morning Drs.
Brown and Nesbitt gave the wound a
thorough examination, and we are
glad to say that while they
found the wound a desperate one
they think it not necessarily fatal.

Limestone Opens Today.
The fall session of Limestone Col
lege will open today with more natter
ing prospects than at any former
opening. A number of the young la
dies arrived yesterday afternoon and
today every train will he filled with
them.
We welcome these dear pupils of
Limestone College to our city and as
sure them that they can call on The
Ledger at all times when it can serve
them or their grand old college.
Prof, and Mrs. Scherubel arrived at
the college Saturday. Prof. Scheru
bel Is the music director at the col
lege.
