The county board of registration was in session yesterday. Good for Cherokee! Yesterday was another salesday without any sales. From almost every section of the county farmers are bragging on good crops. The county board of control met yesterday anil transacted routine business. Miss Rosa Byars celebrated her birthday Sunday by giving a dinner to a number of her young friends. The Gaffney Lime Company fired the kilns of its new plant the last of j last week and is turning out lime right along. Rev. YV. T. Thompson went to Pa- colet Saturday to begin a protracted meeting in the Baptist church there, of which he is pastor. J. N. Lipscomt) has been elected president of the Gaffney Telephone j company. This assures good service in the future as in the past. Rev. W. R. Richardson, editor of the Southern Christian Advocate, preached two good sermons in Buford Street M. E. church Sunday. A protracted meeting will begin at Macedonia on next Sunday. The pas tor. Rev. A. D. Davidson, will be as sisted in the preaching by Dr. A. M. Simms. A protracted meeting will begin at Providence church on next Sunday. The pastor. Rev. F. C. Hickson, will; be assisted by Rev. J. E. Smith, of I Concord, N. C. There was a big gathering of the young yeomanry of the county in the city Saturday. There was general good order and business men report good business. Lowery Walker, who has been at tending a business college at Macon, Ga., returned to the city Friday and went to work in the National Bank as collector Saturday. The plasterers and painters are in the Wood buildings on Limestone street and are keeping right up with the woodworkers. The brick work was finished Saturday. As evidence of the promising con dition of the growing corn crop. Mr. I Fred V. Turner showed us yesterday twelve "nubbins” that grew in one shuck, and said he left one good ear on the same stalk. L. Baker is jacking up his store house ocupied by Walter Baker on ; corner of Limestone and Birnie streets to make it conform to the new sidewalk. Arthur Hopper has the job and is pressing it. The directors of the Gaffney Sav ings Bank met last Friday and elected D. C. Ross president, J. G. Wardlaw vice-president, and Maynard Smyth Cashier. B. L. Hames was added to the board of directors. The preliminary trial of Mrs. Rice, who is held under bond at Blacksburg charged with living in adultery with , one Dougal), who has several aliases, * which was to have been held yester day, was put off till another day. An interesting and successful pro tracted meeting was conducted last week at White Plains church by the pastor. Rev. Mr. Samples, assisted by Rev. Mr. Hollins, of Greenville. The meeting closed Sunday. Twenty-two joined the church. Mr. Shields Allison, one of our best farmers and one who had his crop almost destroyed by hail a few weeks j ago. says his cotton is putting out new branches and leaves, and some squares, but he has little hope at much cotton from It as he thinks it will be too late to mature. Both i were thrown and our little friend, Jay Sarratt, the Western Union messen ger. had one of his legs right badly bruised, but we hope he will be on his wheel again in a day or two de livering messages in his usual polite way. The county summer school which has been in session the last month in this city, closed last Friday. Prof- fessors Sarratt and Griffith have been diligent in their management of it. and the attendance has been good. The teachers attending the school seemed to appreciate the opportunity afforded them for their betterment and made the most of it. All in all it, was a most successful session and will be of great benefit to the county. The Farmers Mutual Insurance As sociation held its annual meeting in the court house yesterday. The offi- j cers of the association made their annual reports, which were entirely satisfactory. All losses during the past year have been promptly met and there is an encouraging cash bal ance in the treasury. The associa tion was well attended and continued interest was manifested. The follow ing were elected as officers for the ensuing year: R. M. Gaffney, presi dent. J. Eb. Jefferies secretary and treasurer.
