Rev. Amos Clary will fill the pulpit
of Limestone Springs Baptist church
next Sunday for the pastor, Rev. L.
C. Ezell.
The many friends of Hon. Wm. Jef
feries are glad to learn that he is re
covering from a severe spell of sick
ness.
The State Dental Association of
South Carolina is in session this w'eek
at White Stone Springs. Gaffney is
represented by Drs. W. K. Gunter and
D. P. Thompson.
All persons interested in the grave
yard at Salem church are requested
to meet at the church next Thursday
morning, the 28th inst., at 8 o’clock
a. m., to clean it off.
A. W. Clary, Geo. Jefferies, Albert
Kirby and Ben Clary are traveling in
the North Carolina mountains. They
are in their own conveyances and are
camping and having a good time.
Engineers of the Southern have been
engaged this week in surveying a line
for a spur track from a point on the
main line near the Nott place to the
lime works at Limestone Springs.
The front of the Live Stock stables
has been torn out to give place to
the pressed brick and plate glass
front to be placed in the handsome
storerooms they are being converted
Owing to the low stage of water in
Broad river the Cherokee Falls Mills
have to shut down a part of every
day. The river is lower now than it
is remembered to have been in the
last thirty years.
While Columbia. Spartanburg and
Greenville are distressed at the quan
tity and quality of their city water,
Gaffney’s deep well is pouring out
50.000 gallms of water to her people
every day, that is as pure as gold and
clear as crystal.
On Wednesday Mr. James George,
who only has one arm, killed a blue
crane on the wing near Wilkinsville
that was about seventy-five yards
from him. It measured five feet and
three inches from the tip of the bill
to the end of the toes.
At a recent meeting of the direct
ors of the Carpet Mill company, Mr.
J. N. 1 ipscomb was elected pres’dent
to succeed the late F. G. Stacy. Mr.
Lipscomb is a thorough young busi
ness man and well qualified for the
responsible duties of the office.
The colored Odd Fellows of the city
are arranging for a big time on the
28th and 29th inst. They have secured
the spring lot and grounds at Lime
stone and the program will include a
barbecue, speaking by prominent men
of the race, baseball and other amuse
ments.
People in the country are becoming
more and more intersted every day
in having the State liquor shop in
Gaffney closed. Many gentlemen in
the county who are in position to
know, have recently told us that the
people in the country are ripe for the
change and want it made.
Mr. and Mrs. John McKinney, who
have been living in Gaffney for some
years, have returned to their former
home at Providence, R .1. Mr. Mc
Kinney w'as employed in the finishing
mill here, and he and Mrs. McKinney
made many friends in Gaffuey, who
regret to have them leave us. We
extend to them our best wisheh for
the future.
Mr. T. G. Chalk, of Ravenna, w r ho
has passed many years of his now’
j rather long life in teaching, is attend
ing the county summer school for
teachers, trying to better equip him
self for his life work in w’hich he is
a great favorite of his patrons. Al-
i ways, as in all the walks of life, con
scientiously doing his duty as he
sees it, Mr. Chalk is a citizen for our
county to be proud of.
W. J. Dougall, alias C. M. Monett,
alias E. C. Smith, and Mrs. Hattie P.
Rice, who were arrested Monday by
Sheriff Thomas at Blacksburg, under
a warrant charging them with living
in adultery, which was sw’orn out by
Mrs. Smith, w’ho says she is the wife
of the man with many names, have,
after sending many telegrams to
friends in the North, put up a cash
bond of $1,000.00 with Magistrate
Gold for their appearance for trial at
the October term of court.
On last Sunday night Sam Smith,
colored, from the Wilkinsville section,
; came to towm and captured one of
his run away minor hoys and took
him home. Before reaching home,
however, he stripped the boy and
gave him a good sound thrashing in
which the neighbors were amazed by
the cries of the boy for mercy. C. C.
Mabry went before J. L. Strain, magis
trate, and took out a warrant against
Smith for cruelly mistreating his
child and the magistrate fined Smith
ten dollars or twenty days on the
.chaingang. The fine was promptly
| paid.
