A SCHOOL FOR INFANTS.
The
Mol here of the City Will Organize
a Kindergarten In OafTuey.
The mothers of Gaffney, or all of
them who are interested, are request
ed to meet at the residence of Mrs.
H. I>. Wheat, on Granard street, to
morrow (.Saturday) afternoon at 5:30
o’clock for the purpose of organizing
a Kindergarten school in this city.
Only twenty-four pupils, between the
ages of three and seven, will bo ad
mitted to the school; but as their
admission is to bo decided by vote, it
is seen that each child has an equal
chance with the others, and all the
mothers who desire their children to
be taught in this manner should at
tend the meeting and cast their
votes.
Miss Willis, a prominent lady of
Columbus, Ga., has been engaged to
conduct the school; and it is the de
sire of those here who have the mat
ter in charge that the organization
and location of the school be decided
upon at once so that she may be no
tified, as her services are in demand
elsewhere. Miss Willis has had long
experience in kindergarten teaching.
She is a lady of the highest culture
and refinement, splendidly educated,
and with her patient, gentle and af
fectionate nature she is peculiarly
fitted for the training of young chil
dren.
A Kindergarten ftchool has been
needed in Gaffney for a long while,
as by no other system can children
be taught and trained so successfully.
The system was invented by one
Friedrich Frobel, a German educator,
and the name means a "garden of
children,” being synonymous with
our "garden of flowers.” The intro
ducer of the method saw that infant
schools were not conducted right,
and he set to work to study the ways
and doings of infants from their
birth, noting down systematically
what kind of mental food and what
kind of bodily activity Nature
prompted them at each stage of
their existence to prefer. He reach
ed the conclusion, among other
things, that "the work of the teach
er is not to give knowledge from
without, but to supply material,
means and opportunities in a rational
and harmonious order for the child’s
mind spontaneously to work upon;
and that in the presentation of their
materials or occupations there must
be no break, because all occupations
which train must be developed out of
each other.”
The name of the school implies
that children should be trained indi
vidually like a flower or plant, and
the kindergarten method has demon
strated the fact that in no other
way can a child learn so rapidly. It
is a well known fact that early im
pressions are generally more laating
than those' made on the uiind later in
life, and too much care and judgment
cannot be exercised in training the
infant mind.
The terms of the Kindergarten to
be organized here are exceedingly
reasonable, and motberi in the city
who have children between three
and seven years of age should make
an effort to enter them in this school.
Remember the time and place for
the meeting—at the residence of
Mrs. H. D. Wheat, on Granard street,
at 5:80 o’clock tomorrow (Saturday)
afternoon.
A SERIgg OF MEETINGS.
Will Begin »t Cherokee Avenue Ueptlat
Church Tomorrow Night.
Services will be held tomorrow
night in the Cherokee Avenue Bap
tist Church, and Rev. Arch. C. Cree,
pastor of the First Baptist Church
of the city, will occupy the pulpit.
The meeting tomorrow night will
be the first of a series of meetings
which are to be conducted at the
Cherokee Avenue church for a term
of ten days or two weeks, as the in
terest manifested by the congrega
tions of that church may determine.
Rev. Mr. Cree will do the preach
ing for Fastor Ford throughout the
meeting, and all who attend will have
the pleasure of hearing some good
sermons.
Everybody has a cordial Invitation
to be present at each service.
We hope that the work of Revs.
Cree and Ford may result in much
good throughout the community.

WHY THE MAYOR HUSTLED.
Lawyer Hall DUturb* the Peace of Mind
of Mayor Nathan Littlejohn.
Ail things taken into consideration
Gaffney has one of the best mayors
to be found in upper South Carolina.
There is one thing about him, how
ever, that even this newspaper can
not approve of, and that is he is
powerful slow in his movements and
he certainly possesses some antiqua
ted ideas that the mayor of a real
live progressive town like Gaffney
should not possess. One of these
ideas is that he insists on maintain
ing a very productive blackberry
patch right in the heart of the town.
In fact it adjoins The Ledger office
and we have been put to our wits end
lo keep the hungry printers at work
instead of trespassing upon the
mayor’s blackberry patch. Yester
day morning Mr. W. 8. Hall, Esq ,
passed this blackberry patch and
observed that a lady and her colored
servant were picking blackberries.
He recognized the lady, but thinking
to play a practical joke on the mayor
he went a little way up the street
and seeing the mayor informed him
that "two women were picking his
blackberries.” Without ascertain
ing who the two women were the
mayor remarked "I’ll go right down
and run them off. They’ve got no
right to tresspass upon my property
in such a manner. I’ll have them
up before me for contempt of court
if they don’t get off at once.” 8o
saying he went off in a double quick
step. A Ledger representativo met
him about half way between the
postoffice and the blackberry patch
and being attracted by the unusual
quick movement of His Honor ven
tured to ask what was up. "Oh get
out of my way, man, I am in a hurry.
Somebody is in my blackberry patch,
and I am going down there and put
them out. I’ve got no time to fool
with a blamed newspaper man any
way.” So off be started again.
When he reached the blackberry
patch he observed two sunbonnets
that hid the faces of the forms
beneath, and not waiting to ascertain
who they were he blurted out: "Say,
there, what are you doing in that
blackberry farm? Don’t you know
you are' violating the law? Get out
at once, or 1’il have you arrested.”
About this time a smiling counte
nance beamed oat from beneath one
of the sunbonnets and Mrs. Little
john said: "Oh Nathan, don’t make
a fool of yourself,” and she went on
picking blackberries while the mayor
said he was in a hurry to go to the
court house, as he wanted to see a
man on important business.
