Death—Murderer Killed by Train.
Saturday morning an excursion
train was run from Spartanburg to
Charlotte, N. C., over the Southern
railroad. It was under the manage
ment of Messrs. Sloan Bros., of Whit
ney, and carried six coaches, five for
white people and one for colored—
the colored car being the front one.
It passed Gaffney a little after 8
o'clock Saturday morning pretty
well loaded, and several boarded it
at this place. The crowd of course
was lively, as was natural from the
nature of the occasion, but did not
seem at all disorderly.
However, it was not much of a
surprise to many when it was framed
next morning that there bad been
a general row on board on the return
trip Saturday night, and that one
man had been killed and another
wounded. Such occurrences are the
usual out-come of excursions of
that kind and seem as much a part
of the program as any other feature
of the occasion. Besides this shoot
ing there was a general row and a
free-for-all fight, it seems, nearly all
the way, in which heads were
cracked, bodies bruised and cut and
the participants knocked about pro
miscuously; but no shooting irons
were used and no one was badly hurt.
The man who was killed was Mr.
Dexter Kirby, a popular young con
ductor on the Spartanburg Electric
railway, and the wounded man was
Mr. W. W. Steadman, also an em
ployee of the same company. These
gentlemen had been appointed by
the managers of the excursion as of
ficers to keep quiet and orderly con
duct on board the train, and it was
while endeavoring to do their duty
that they received their wounds—
one, his death wound, and the other,
a bullet through bis left arm, which
while very painful, is not considered
serious. The details of the shooting,
as given by eye witnesses, are about
as follows: When the train, on its
return trip from Charlotte, was near
Thickety, six miles below this place,
Wallace Haynes, a negro who lived
near Clifton, became boisterous and
unruly and started toward the
platform of the coach. At the time
all three of the train officers were in
the coach reserved for colored people,
and when Haynes started for the
platform Steadman ordered him to
stay inside. At this, Haynes grew
more stabborn and unruly, but re
turned to his seat near the middle of
the coach, at the same time bran
dishing a pistol which he said was
his best friend, He was told to put
upjthe gun, but this seemed to enrage
him all the more, and instead of
obeying the order he deliberately
fired at Steadman, the ball striking
him in the left arm. Young Kirby,
who was standing close by, sprang
forward and clutched Haynes and
endeavored to secure bis pistol. He
was unsuccessful! in his attempt to
get possession of the weapon, but as
he fell forward on the negro, he (the
negro) also lost his balance and
fell. Haynes then opened fire on
Kirby, shooting him directly above
the heart and in the right groin. After
shooting three or four times, Haynes
backed rapidly towr rd the end of the
car, opened the door and jumped
from the train, which was said to be
going at the rate of thirty miles an
hour. No attempt was made to stop
the train and it continued on to Spar
tanburg. Kirby died almost instant
ly. When the train reached Spar
tanburg the news of his death apread
rapidly and created great excitement.
He was one of the most popular em
ployee* of the the city railway, at that
place, and was held iu high esteem
by the officials of the Hue. He was
only twenty-seven years of age, and
bis parents reside at Pelham.
Sunday morning at 2:80 o’clock
Sheriff Vernon and a posse started
out from Spartanburg to search for
the negro murderer, and it was not
very long until his dead and mangled
body was found near the railroad
track where he had jumped from the
train. This seemed a fitting end to
such a desperate character, and a
just reward for the terrible deed he
bad so recently committed. Haynes
was a young negro, and those who
knew him say that be had long been
regarded as a bad one, always going
armed and almost constantly in
some kind of scrape.
A prominent man in Spartanburg
who was an eye witness to the shoot
ing. states that he followed Haynes
to the platform and saw him swing
off the cars. Haynes threatened to
shoot him if he advanced further,
and being unarmed, he stopped; and
thus the negro escaped.
John Pratt, a negro who confessed
to being a partner of Haynes, was ar
rested in Spartanburg Sunday morn
ing and lodged in jail. On his per
son was found a loaded pistol, and it
is now reported that he is thought to
be the murderer, as the balls taken
from Kirby tallied in size with the
calibre of>Pratt’3 pistol, it being a

32-calibre. It is always difficult to
learn the facts of such occurrences
until after a thorough investigation
has been made, and it may be that
later accounts»will contain new de
velopments.
It was, Indeed, an unfortunate oc
currence, and young Kirby s family
have the sympathy of everybody.
Texas is the largest cotton state.
Her product last year amounted to
2,248 000 bales. Georgia came second
with 1.260,000 bales. Mississippi 1,-
226,000 and Alabama 1,019 800 bales.
