Storlrn of (lie Admiral Who Whm Cnllrd “Tlie KiiKlinliniiin.” The late Admiral Maknrott of the Russian navy was nicknamed “The Englishman" by the Emperor Alexan der II., owing to his intense activity and devotion to outdoor sports, says the London News. Even when long past middle age he allotted two hours a day to physical exercise*. He rode before breakfast every morning, but his favorite exercise was swimming. Not only was Makaroff a first rate swimmer, but he attempted to coerce his subordinates into equal proficiency. In 1900 he gave a silver cup to be competed for by the sailors at Cron- stadt, and, timing the race, was much disgusted to find that the winner had taken longer to cover half a verst than he had often done it in himself. Every morning he was rowed in a boat from the government quay for the purpose of bathing, and "old Bluebeard," with a towel across his arm, was sometimes seen walking to the quay within a week of the breaking up of the ice. One of Makaroft’s weaknesses was the l»elief that he was a born artist He invariably copied the designs for his own inventions, and his success in this encouraged him in the belief that he could draw from nature. During a holiday, two years ago, on the north coast of the Gulf of Finland he spent nearly all his mornings turn ing out water color drawings of the surrounding scenery. One day two young cadets from the Sissoi Veliki, who were spending their holiday on a datcha or summer house close by, saw nn elderly and somewhat untidy old man working laboriously at a sketch. Looking over his shoulder, they began to criticise the drawing unfavorably. The admiral turned round and said quizzically, “I think I know you, young gentlemen.’’ “We don’t know you,” retorted one scapegrace, “but you’re as like old Bluebeard as two eggs.” The incident ended by the admiral inviting the offenders to lunch, dis missing them with the caustic words, “Even elderly artists deserve respect from naval aristocrats.” THE BAROMETER TIE. A firm of British haberdashers, ac cording to a newspaper report, have it in their mind to place upon the London market a necktie which is sympathetic to all possible atmospheric conditions, says the London Globe. It is to be called the barometer tie, and instead of looking at the glass the wearer of one of these ties lias only to look In the glass to know what the weather will be like. For instance, on a fine morning the wearer dons this cravat and finds that it is a summer blue. He walks down the street and, catching sight of his tie Jn a window or looking glass, si^es that it lias changed to a delicate pink and hurries home for his umbrella. A little ; inter the tie deepens to nn angry pur- 1 pie, and the wearer then wires home to j have the fire lighted in bis ty^room ! and his winter garments set out to aft*. And if by chance the tie changes to a violent green the poor frettisl proprie tor hies him to the shoemaker for ga- locbes or to the ironmonger for sknfes, ns it will assuredly snow in a few hours. The most disquieting feature in this announcement is that the sympathetic material of which the cravat 16 com posed is suitable to every kind of gar ment, so that Indies may adopt it for blouses, hats, skirts and parasols. One really doubts if humanity could endure the spectacle of a London street with the frocks of all the ladies performing these dizzying transformations. Plan of Advauclnir the Standard* of Manner*. If we are to have any fine civiliza tion in the United States good man ners must be drilled into the school children, and the Outlook proposes to the teachers of the country that they shall organize everywhere in the schools leagues for courtesy, voluntary associations of boys and girls for the purpose of advancing the standards of manners and of developing those in stincts of courtesy, kindness and help fulness which are characteristic of the American in nil parts of the country. The American ought to be the most courteous and the best mannered per son in the world, for his natural kind ness, his desire to he helpful and to make himself agreeable are recognized everywhere. He fails, whenever lie does fail, not because of bad inten tions, but because of lack of training or because of haste. As the use of English is supervised in every recita tion In every good school, so the man ners of every boy and girl ought to be supervised and corrected in every school relation. “Elirlit Hour” Monument. The first monument to trade union ism was erected recently in Melbourne, Australia. It is called the Eight Hour monument, ns it is in commemoration of the eight hour system, which was begun in Australia forty-eight years ago. The monument is a tall marble pillar surmounted by an oblong block bolding a globe and torch. The word “Prosperity” is written on the globe, and three large figure eights are en graved upon the block. X Hay Nuraa*. Early in my professional career I realized that Chronic Diseases were not being given tho attention which their importance warranted. I saw that these diseases required a special fit ness which the busy practitioner could never acquire. For more than twenty years I have de voted myself exclusively to the study and treatment of these diseases, and the fact that physi cians recommend me to their patients is an evidence of my skill and ability in my special line. I give special counsel to physicians with obstinate and obscure cases. I have devoted particular attention to chronic diseases of men and women, and not class of disease requires more intelligent and expert treatment. It is a fact that a majoty men owe the seriousness of their condition to improper treatment, and a failure to realh importance of placing their case in the hands of a skilled and expert specialist. * Nervous Overindultfenee, indiscretions and excesses are not the only causes of an impairment of sexual strength.
