Chicago, June 1.—A union of the majority of the nations of Europe Into a great federation, has been pre dicted by Anatole Leroy-Raulieu, the French economist ami sociologist, in a lecture on “The United States of Europe,” given under the auspices of the "Alliance Francaise.” In this union, which Professor Ban- lieu thought was sure to come about, | though possibly not in the twentieth ! century, three nations, ne said, would net be included: England, because it would combine instead with the United States. Russia, because it would form a j great independent nation by iself. Turkey, because it would be absorb ed by the coalition and lose its identi ty- The union would be a necessity, the speaker said, to resist American ag gression, and the “yellow peril.” The lecturer said he perceived that this country has a “tendency to look upon continental Europe with the same regard that children have for su perannuated parents, whose useful ness has come to an end.” “Europe, said Professor Baulieu, “is in danger. The United States is pressing hard upon the old countries in all lines of- activity, not merely commercial, but also artistic and sci- entilic. If this Is not a sufficient cause there is another in the Far East. The progress of Japan will mean the awakening of China. Condemned to Death Tells of Wealthy Contractor’s Murder. Washington, Pa.. June 1.—Milavor Kovouick, now under sentence of death for the murder of Samuel Fer guson, a wealthy contractor, last sum mer, made a confession to the author ities exonerating Milavor Paftrovick-, who was recently convicted of murder in the second degree for the same c: line. In his confession Kovouick names Joseph E. Buchewicz, and Nikola Nik- owicz as his accomplices and says they are now in Croatia beyond the pale of the law. The crime to which Kovouick con fesses was committed as Contractor Ferguson was driving along a road in Woshingtcn county on his way to pay the men at the Feiguson railroad camp. He uas blown from his bug gy by a dyqamite mine placed under a small bridge in the road. He had; a small valise containing $5,000, which I was stolen. Pittsburg detective* traced Kovouick and Pattrovick to a j place where they were made prisor# ers. The detectives will leave short ly for Croatia in search of the accom plices of Kovt uick. St. Petersburg, June 1.—Reports of an attack upon Count Lamsdorff, min ister of foreign affairsi, which grow last night into a rumor (later denied) of attempted assassination, have their foundation, as nearly as can be as certained, in a personal assault com mitted Monday evening by Prince Dol- gorouky, a disappointed officeseeker. The prince is an opponent of Count Lamsdorff policy and is said to have become insane through brooding over his alleged grievances. DolgorOuky formerly was an officer in the imperial hussars, but is now on the retired list. At one time ho was connected with the foreign office as an attache at Vienna. Since then ne is said to have been a constant applicant for a position in the for eign service, but without success. He b< lor gs to the Slavophile party, which is strongly opposed to the pacitic pol icy of the minister of foreign affairs. Ac fording to the story current in the city, the prince met Count Lamdsorff in the street Monday evening and, without warning, struck him on the head with a walking stick. In so do ing. he is said to have calmly an nounced that he chastised the foreign minister in the name of the whole Ri ,-sian people. Police agents rush ed to the scene and seized the prince, woo immediately handed him a card, jjysng it was a private affair. Nev ertheless, he was placed under ar rest. Count Lamsdorff called upon the; emperor Tuesday, it having been his : regular day for an audience, and,} therefore, not necessarily connected with the assault. The count’s friends are dco| ly incensed over the affair, which is regarded, however, as the act of a madman. Governor Herrick Dispatches Troops to Ironton, Ohio. Ironton, O* June 1.—The trouble that has been brewing this week at Hanging Rock furnaces assumed a threatening aspect today. The strikers are parading the streets carrying Winchesters and thretening the nonunion men wher ever found, especially the negro men who had taken the places of strik ers in the furnaces. It was announced at the same time that the new men were also armed. It was feared that a serious colli sion would occur at any time, and a reign of terror existed over what was expected during the night. As the authorities were defied and helpless, Sheriff Palno appealed to Governor Herrick for troops, and the latter replied that three companies, in addition to the Ironton militia, would be sent by specital train.
