Mukden, May 25.-11 P- m.—Accord ing Well Paid Literary Men. The “lit'ry feller” is usually pictured as a man who wears long hair, eye glasses and an abstracted air. Cari caturists are fond of picturing him in a seedy frock coat in the act of im portuning a brutal editor or a stage manager. Of course there are many of this type left, but. it is said, there are at least a hundred men in New York who earn incomes ranging from $20,000 to $.'0,000 by their own unaid ed typewriters. At least New York is their market, but most of them pre fer the suburbs for home. Clyde Fitch, Gus Thomas, John Kendrick Hangs and others of that class of successful writers all have, fine homes within au hour's ride of the city, where they live and entertain on a smile that the liter ary man of a half century ago would not even have dreamed of. to the latest information obtain able, the Japanese have resumed their forward movement. Che Frxv May 25.—2 p. m.—Chinese junks arrived from Takushan, a part lying southwest of Antung, report the landing of 5.000 Japanese troops at Takushan on the 21st instant. Another junk from Pitsewo reports the Japanese landing a small num- i ber of troops there every day and building temporary barracks on Elliott island, where a hundred ships, in cluding men-of-war and transports, have made a rendezvous. Only small skirmishes are reported along the western shore of the Liao Tung pe ninsula ii|* to the 22d. Dallas, Tex., May 25—The general assembly of the Cumberland Presby terian church met this morning with the hope of being able to dispose ol the question of church union tonight or tomorrow morning. The assembly is meeting in the Cen- tray Christian church, which provides better facilities for the large bodies at tending the debate. The usual devo tional exercises were held, durin* which references were frequent 1> made to the great question at hand, and special pleas were made for Di vine guidance in its solution. The assembly was then called to or der by Moderator Settle. The space allotted to visitors was jammed and many could not gain entrance. Th (i debate on the proposed churc* union immediately Ifbgan and contin ued throughout the morning session, being marked with great earnestness on the part of the speakers. The rare feature of the question is being emphasized many delegates holding it as their belief that the diversity ol views between the northern and south ern churches on this point are too wide for an agreement. A Story Told About tbe Jap*m««e A <1 in I rn I *m College Day*. Admiral Sotokichi Urlu, who Is win ning distinction In the Japanese navy, received his nautical education at An napolis, where he took high standing and was popular with his classmates, says the Saturday Evening Post. He was noted for studying hard and for great conscientiousness in the perform- tnce of the thousand and one duties of the uavai cadet. Not long after enter ing and while our language was still largely a mystery to him he was one Jay confined to his room by a slight 111- tiess. He was looked after by the sur geon, and his condition became a inat- ser of record. Nevertheless he felt moved to send explanations to a favor- te Instructor, and did so as follows: My Teacher—You have seen that I do not stand before you. I am inclosed in the room by the much sickness. I do not feel like making the stir. I regret to miss your most beautiful instruction of the mathematic. Tomorrow 1 hope greatly to find it easy to make the stir. From his achievements in the present war the admiral seems to be in full possession of his ability to “make the itir.” An Open Letter.
