Woodville Against the Board of Police Commissioners of the Crescent City. Chicago, May 4.—A dispatch to The Tribune from New Orleans, La., says: , Mayor Capedeville has asked the j members of the board of police com missioners of New Orleans to resign as a result of the charges by Commis sioner John A. Woodville, that the commissioners are “grafters” and are responsible for gambling houses and lottery shops. The mayor’s action produced a sensation. Riotous scenes attended the meeting of the board and, on adjournment, Woodville was cheer-1 ed and carried about by a crowd of j his supporters. MARRIED MEN PROTEST. Organize Anti-Euchre and Home Pres ervation Society. Early., N. Y., May 4—Twenty-one husbands who reside in Bayonne, N. J., have met and organized the mar ried men’s anti-euchre and home pres ervation society. They declare it is high time their wives and other men’s wives were cured of the progressive euchre habit and propose to use all their efforts to establish such a cure. Several letters from other towns ana cities were read endorsing the move ment. A gentleman by the name of Hicks in accepting the presidency of the new s iciety, said: “It is high time we asserted our manhood and made a determined effort to down this hab it which threatens to wreck our homes. Many a night I have had to walk the floor with the baby until 2 or 3 o’clock waiting until my wife returned from a euchre party, has got so that the clubs meet every afternoon and evening and are now talking about playing on Sunday.” Other men spoke in a similar vein and resolved to curb the popularity of euchre by every means in their power. The number of Thibetans is esti mated at 1,500, and their position may threaten the British line communica- j tion with Khangma. No reply was made to the Thibetans | except two or three shots to keep down the enemy’s fire during the re tirement. The action on the part of the Thibetans finally disposes of the possibility of any useful purpose being served by the visit of the Am- i ban from whom Colonel Younghus- band has received no further com munication. It suggests, indeed, that the only object of the visit Is to gain further time for the defense of the Tassa road and probably for the arnv al of expected help from the north. C., May 4.—Beautiful Isabel Porter, who had been chosen by her schoolmates for queen at the May day celebration given by the pu pils of the Biltmore Parish school, died of pneumonia 48 hours before she was to have been crowned as queen. During the last hours of her life she talked constantly of her dress she was to wear, of her schoolmates and teachers and the celebrations. At the funeral th<- iionors of the queen ol the May were given her by her school- restore their mates. She was buried in the dainty tality, which white dress she was to have danced in. and her schoolmates wove a crown of flowers which was placed upon her head as it would have rested in the celebration . Panama, .May 4.—The United States canal commission today took formal possession of the canal route and of the property of the Panama Canal company. William B. From today the canal wmrks will be under the direction of Major Bark Brooke, of the engineer corps of the United States ar.ny t who represented the canal commission at the ceremony of the transfer. Immediately after the transfer the United States flag was hoisted over the legation and over the canal offices in the Cathedra! plaza. Frightful Accident Narrowly Averted On Coast Line Road. Albany, Ga., May 4.—A frightful ac cident with heavy loss of life was narrowly averted when the north- the present time, when the fatal influ ence of weather conditions in pneu monia cases alone has already made a black mark in medical annals for the enormous number of deaths due to this disease. Delegrtes Present From All Southern ' Cities. Tampa Fla.. May 4.— Panama canal convention opened here this morning with a large attendance from commer cial bodies through the south and tin* meeting vas called to order by Presi.b nt W. R. Fuller, of th eboard of trade. Addresses of welcome to visiting delegations were made by Governor \\ S Jennings, Congressman S. M. Sparkman, Mayor James McKay. New Orleans was represented by a largi delegation, and all the southern cities have delegates present. After addresses the convention ad journed until the afternoon, when per manent organization was perfected. Judge Gober denies the allegations of fraud in regard to the management of the Fannin county primary election and other irregularities. Atlantan Killed In Texas. Waco, Tex., May 4.— william S Douglas, formerly of Atlanta. Ga., was killed by Tom Willis in the town ol Moody. 18 miles from Waco. Tex Three shots were fired and Douglas died without speaking. It is charged that Douglas made remarks about a member of the Willis family. The slayer of Douglas gave himself up at once. TELEGRAPHIC BREVITIES.
