The Study of Birds and Flowers, of Ferns and Mushrooms—What it Adds of Interest to the Vacation. Everyone should cultivate an out- door fad. Some persons do nt need to cult! vate it. being already so well provided that their chief trouble is to find time to give each fad its needful amount of exercise. They are the exception rather than the rule. It is more com mon to find fadless folk. Lacking some better diversion they spend their summer mornings on hotel ve randas absorbed in fancy work and know no more of the country or the seaside when they go from it than when they came to it. Coelum, non animum. Or to put it in the vernac ular, they have changed their spots but not their point of view. To such women as these the coun try outing is not a success. If I do not include men in this categroy it is because they usually have some thing they do when they are off out of doors. They fish or they go boat ing or they hunt. At the worst they will take a hand at hall with the boys or at h ast sit on the fence and watch the village nine. Or if they are re mote from such opportunities as this they will make friends with the men and talk with them about their work really necessary, unless she means to make a more or less scientfic obser vation of the different species of iiora. And when she begins to do that, her play is likely to become a good deal like work. She is better off if she endeavors to make only a collection of flowers of a certain kind. This will quicken her powers of ob servation. As she strolls along a country road or spins along on her wheel she will he prompt to note this I or that unfamiliar blosom. If she is gifted with the power of painting, or even of coloring drawings, she is fortunate in her ahilify to make for ; herself a set of pictures that will keep summer for her into the midst of winter. Not less interesting than the flow ers are the ferns. They are not the easiest things in the world to know, although at first they may seem a trifle compared with the flowers. But i they have so many minute variations that it is puzzling to distinguish be tween different kinds. It is a keen pleasure, however, when one has learned even a few of them by name and is in a position to display one’s superior knowledge to the ignorant. But, some one may say. one cannot put in all one’s time studying some one thing. It makes a vacation too ; much like work. It. certainly would, if one did it. But ’ the thing to do is to make the fad an incentive to other things. If one has heard, for instance, that there are S pitcher plants at such and such a spot three or four miles distant, what an object for a morning's ride! The woman who puts wheeling in its proper place in her esteem and who takes her bicycle as much as a matter of course as she does her walking skirt, will not need to he told what a pleasure it is to find some excuse for an excursion. She is always ready for something of the sort and has the delight of knowing that she is bene fiting herself by the exercise at the same time that she is having a jolly day with an object in view. It may be said, by the way, that the woman who is accustomed to rid ing a wheel is the woman who is quick to perceive the new plant, the new bird. It was a very well known educator who said, in speaking of the bicycle, that it not only furnishes exercise for the muscles but occupies the mind, trains the eye and gives frequent occasion for quick decis ions. All of these are needed if a wo man is to get the best out of the fad she has taken up. Moreover, she does not want a fad that is going to keep her in one place, bending all her attention upon some near-at-hand object. If that is the effect, she might, for many reasons, get as much good from the fancy work on the hotel ve randa. She has enough of toil in one place when she is in her own home. When she goes away she must widen her horizon and change her environ ment in every way she possibly can. As one keeps up the fad habit it is likely to broaden. A woman may begin by watching for certain wild flowers or ferns, hut she does not stop there. She goes on to something else. Not only in the country is the study pursued with ardor. One young wo man tells of an experience she had in a large city park where she and a number of girl friends had been ac customed to betake themselves with opera glasses to study the birds dur ing the morning hours. They had evidently been observed by the gamins of the neighborhood, for one day as the girl who told the tale was wander ing through a leafy path she was sud denly confronted by a small boy, who made an imaginary opera glass of his hands, through which he glared at her as he announced in trumpet tones. “I see a female!” The pursuit of the bird as an ob ject of scrutiny may not appeal to everyone. The near-sighted, even when armed with field glasses, does not find as much enjoyment in the bird life as she could wish.
