Exercises Attended by a Large Crowd
Last Sunday.
A laifte concourse of people gath
ered at Rehoboth Sunday to witness
the dedicatory exercises. The dedi
catory sermon was preached by Rev.
\V. R. Potter, of the Limestone Pres
byterian church of this city, and was
notable for its forcefulness and clear
ness. Mr. Potter chose as his text:
Math. 16:18, “Upon this rock I will
build my church and the gates of
hell (hades) shall not prevail against
it.” He said, in part, that we live in
a world of change and decay; that all
material things must pass away, but
that there was one thing that should
endure all the ravages of time—the
church of the living God—the re
deemed of Christ.
He explained that Christ meant by
the expression, “this rock,” himself,
or the truth contained in Peter’s no
ble confession. He then spoke at
length on the security of the church,
stressing the truth that all the pow
ers of darkness and all the forces of
evil and all the hosts of sin and Satan
would not be able to overcome it. He
exhorted his hearers to fight under
the blue banner of the cross rather
than under the red flag of Satan; to
become members of the true church
and let their light shine.
Considering the great crowd and
number of children in the audience
the attention given the speaker was
excellent. After the sermon the
church was set apart to the worship
of God by scripture reading and
prayer.
At the conclusion of the morning
services recess was taken. A long
table had been erected at the rear
of the church and the good women in
attendance began to load it down
with good things. To the uniniti
ated it looked as if there was plenty
and to spare, and while we did not
hear of anyone going away hungry,
the manner in which that dinner dis
appeared indicated that if the gather
ing was as hungry for the bread of
life as they were for the good things
that pleases the palate and fill the in
ner man they were indeed a hungry
set. In a very short while it looked
as if a cyclone had struck the table,
but the smiling countenances and the
good nature displayed was evidence
of the fact that everybody was satis
fied with the cyclone.
At the conclusion of the dinner the
congregation reassembled. The af
ternoon program was an informal
one. Rev. W. R. Potter presided.
Short talks were made by Rev. Mr.
Felmet, J. L. Strain, Mr. S. F. Parrott,
editor of The Cherokee News, Mr. W.
Sam Lipscomb, Mr. W. E. M. Kirby,
and Rev. L. R. Gaines and others. All
of these addresses were apt, to the
point and mixed with humor. The
speakers praised the people for their
generosity in erecting this substan
tial church building and encouraged
them to continue the good work
which they had begun in that pros
perous and well ordered community.
Renew Your Card at the Library.
Tne trustees of the Gaffney Library
Association desire to call attention
to the expiration of the annual term
for which cards have been Issued and
to urge upon all of the old members
the importance of a prompt renewal
of membership. This is easy of ac
complishment, the library is conven
iently located in the city hall, the li
brarian. Miss Moorman, is on duty
every afternoon from three until six
o’clock, and all that is necessary is
to call, pay her one dollar and
secure a card carrying with it all
of the privileges of the library for
one year. It is important that we
have money to sustain the enterprise
and surely our citizens will aid us in
this effort, by paying the small sum
of one dollar each year. There are
now over one thousand volumes on
our shelves. The books have been ju
diciously selected, covering a wide
range of thought and embracing
works of reference, history, biogra
phy, science, religion, fiction and po
etry, to which may he added numer
ous magazines and periodicals, and
we believe no library in the State of
fers greater advantages for so small
an outlay on the part of its members,
especially when we remember that
the association has just passed its
first birthday. Generous patrons have
donated rare old books, which can
not now be obtained from publishers,
and we are persuaded that others will
emulate their example.
Friends, place these volumes in
the library where all of our people
can enjoy them. A large consign
ment of new books has just been re
ceived and many of the most popular
vorks, purchased at a large expendi
ture of money, are offered to all citi
zens of Cherokee county in return
for a mere pittance. Will our men
and women and boys and girls not
manifest sufficient interest in books
and good reading—that that makes
for better and higher things—by
availing themselves of the opportuni
ties afforded by membership in the
Gaffney Library Association?

Celebration at Gilead.
We, the Baptist church at Gilead,
will meet on the first Sunday in May,
1904, to celebrate the one hundredth
anniversay of this church. We cor
dially invite all former pastors of the
church and the public at large, to be
present with us. The programme
for the occasion will be arranged by
the speakers present.
Everbody interested is requested
to meet on April 29th to clean off the
graveyard.

Death of W. O. Lee.
Mr. W. O. Lee, a worthy citizen of
this city and an industrious and ef
ficient cotton mill man, died at his
home yesterday about 1 o’clock p. m..
after an illness of about one week of
pneumonia.
Mr. Lee had, by his manly and
straight forward character, made
many friends in Gaffney. He was
about thirty-five years old and leaves
three small children and a sister to
mourn their loss. They have our
sincere sympathy. His remains will
he buried at Boiling Springs, N. C.,
this afternoon with Masonic honors.
