Memphis, April 13.— With the Mis
aissippi river at 38.6 feet and falling
the outlook continues to grow bright
er with the passage of time.
Reports from both up and down, the
river are more and more encouraging
The levees are holding, but are be
coming thoroughly saturated with
water and weak in many placet
which will increase with Ffi elengtli
of time the water remains at a high
stage.
Careful attention is being given to
reinforcements and without storms anc
rains they are expected to remain in
tact.

General Deficiency Bill Reported—Res

Washington, April 13.—At the open
ing of the session of the house today
the speaker announced the resignation
of Mr. Lind (Dem., Minn.) from the
committee on claims and the appoint
ment of Mr. Emrich (Dem., ill.) in
his place.
Mr. Hemingway find.) amid ap
plause, reported the general deficiency
bill, the last of the general appropria
tion bills to be considered at this ses
sion.
The yeas and noes were ordered on
the adoption of a special rule to take
up and consider the Cooper bill amend
ing the Philippine government bill
and providing for guaranteeing bonds

nesses named were wanted. Sena
tor Smoot wrote President Smith to
this effect.
On request of Senator Fairbanks to
day the senate authorized the printing
of President McKinley’s last speech
at Buffalo as a public document. Mr.
Fairbanks slated that, there are many
inquiries for the address.

Saw Mill Men Hold Meeting.
Valdosta, Ga., April 13.—The Geor
gia interstate Saw Mill association
is in session here with a largo at
tendance., the'best attendance of the
larger mills that has ever been had,
It was announced that the decision
in the rate case now pending before
the interstate commerce commission
would be rendered during the week.
The now membership committee re
ported the addition of 12 mills to the
association since the meeting last
month, with prospects of a large in
crease in the near future.

Taylor, D. D., of Boston, Mass., a dis
tinguished scientific lecturer and au
thor on alcohol, has just completed
a course of lectures on that subject
at Eastman and Hawkinsvilla, which
have awakened widespread interest
It is believed that these lectures which
were listened to by large audiences,
helped to defeat the plan to secure a
dispensary at Eastman.
The pastors in each place declare
publicly that these discussions were
tin* strongest in denouncement of the
dispensary they ever heard.

Death Removes Aged Minister.
Atlanta. April 13.—Rev. William R.
McConnell died Tuesday morning at
his home in Fooler, near Savannah,
after a week’s illness. He had been
a clergyman in the Episcopal church
for many years and was well known
in Atlanta, where he often, visited and
where he was ordained a priest. Mr.
Connell was a brother of Mrs. W. S.
Turner and an uncle of Gordon N.
