St. Petersburg, April 13.—The city
is full of rumors of the destruction ot
the lirst-cla.ss battleship Petropavlovsk
with great 1 ss of life.
The reports cannot he confirmed or
traced to an authoritative source.
The emperor has received au ollicial
telegram which is now being deci
phered.
A semi-official telegram received
here confirms the report that the bat
tleship Petropavlovsk has been sunk
off Port Arthur and that only four oi
the officers were saved, among them
being Grand Duke Cyril, who was
wounded.

Cyril, i.as been wounded at Port Ar
thur. A service of thanks gi/ing
because his life was spared has been
held at the Grand Duke’s palace here. I

Details of the first skirmish in the
Pain river which occurred last Sun
day, arrived today in the official re
port of Admiral Hosoga. The text
of the report follows:
“In accordance with my instruc
tions, the captain of the cruiser Kas-
aga directed Lieutenant Yamaguchi
with five men to scout in the mouth
of the Yalu. They accomplished their
work anu n turned to the Kasaga on
Monday. 1 hey entered the river in
a Korean junk and at 2 o’clock Sun
day discovered a party of Russians
leaving the right bank of the river
near Toag Toryuho in a junk. Lieu
: tenant Yamaguchi attacked them, a
| patrol of mounted Japanese troops on
the left bank of the river joining in
l the attack. In the meantime another
1 large Russian junk joined the first
one and opened lire on the Japanese.
; The Russians retired and reached the
bank. They then lied inland. Tlu

the Japanese fleet took part.
Not long after the warning shots
the two Japanes oships let loose the't
whole batteries, the noise being ter
rific. The Variag swerved to east
ward and gave the Japanese her star
board broadside. All about her tho
sea was torn into foam, and spouting
fountains of water with machine gun
fire and exploding shells. Her steer
ing gear was smashed early in the
fight, and she had to depend entirely ;£«
on her engines to steer. Seeing it
was impossible to make the eastward
passage, the Variag headed for the
west and came around in a course
which brought the Variag very muen
nearer the Japanese. Then the dead

passed between the arm and body oi

hip. and bursting, killed every othei
man on the forecastle. Both bridges
were destroyed by bursting shells and

fought off Port Arthur appears to have
consisted, according to the report* re
ceived here, of an unsuccessful at
tempt made by four Japanese cruisers
and one battleship to intercept a large
Russian cruiser coming from the east
The Russian protected cruiser Askold
ami a battleship of the Phobleda type
went to the assistance of the Russian
crtiiser. The 1 forts at Port Arthui
did not participate in the action.
The firing was continuous, but was
of short duration. The Espiegle,
which brought the news here, was
unable, owing to the distance, to as
certain the damage done.

small parties of Russians without uni

Wiju and Yongampho, and that thej
were all driven back.
Poisoned.
-It has been as
certained that the knife used by Joa
quin Miquel Artao, who yesterday at
tempted the life of Premier .Maura
was not poisoned as reported. The
doctors say Senor Maura will have
fully recovered from his wound in
a few days. Artao’s accomplice is
named Mataos Ortel. H e admits he
‘ is an anarchist.
Distinguished Physician Dead.
New Orleans, April 13.—Dr. Narcis
sus Heru Matusa, of Tucson, Ariz.,
is dead, aged 67. He was a native
of Catalonia* Spain, and a distinguish
ed physician. Among his children
are Dr. Rudolph Matasa, head of the
surgical profession in New Orleans.
