Happenings All Over the State Taken from Our Exchanges and Tersely Told'to Ledger Readers. The secretary of State Wednesday chartered the McSwain company of Lamar, a general merchandise con cern having a capital of $25,0(KI. The 15-year-old son of Mr. J. Alec Johnson, of Walhalla, Tuesday morn ing shot the 10-year-old boy of Chas.; Norton, colored. The wound is slight, six birdsbot entering his side. James H. Tillman, of Edgefleld. an- j nounces his candidacy for congress in an interview in the Augusta Chron icle. He will stand for the seat va cated by the death of Col. G. W. Croft. Mr. E. J. Watson, the commissioner i of imigration. has appointed his clerk j in the person of Mr. C. Douglass j Barksdale, a member of the Laurens bar and for several years master in 1 equity of that county. The secretary of State Friday com-1 missioned the Crescent Manufacturing company of Spartanburg, capitalized ; at $50,000. The company will erect j a dyeing plant and D. D. Little and J. J. Littlejohn are the petitioners. In court in Walhalla Monday David Henderson and his mother, botu col ored, were acquitted of the killing of J. M. Henderson, the father and hus band of the defendants. The elder Henderson was killed in a general family row'. Little Lee Campbell, the 11-year- old son of Mr. J. A. Campbell, of Greenwood, while swinging on a car which was being shifted at the Green wood cotton mill Tuesday, fell and had his foot so badly crushed that It had to be amputated. The boy’s other foot was also bruised but the injury was not severe. Fire which broke out about midnignt Sunday in the cellar of the wholesale store of the Bewley Hardware Com pany, of Chester, destroyed that build ing and spread to the New York Racket Store, and threatened the Chester Hotel. The fire was in the heart of the business section, and the loss was $20,00 to $25,000. The State pension board has been called to meet in Columbia on March 23rd for the purpose of distributing the pension money, the amount to be distributed being $200,000. As was stated several days ago there is a large increase in the list and some of them in the lowest class wil not get as much as last year. All except four counties are in. W. J. D. Crane, of Spartanburg, was struck by a train at the Southern de pot in that city Wednesday afternoon, and narrowly escaped a horrible death. Mr. Crane was crossing the track to board a train on the Ashe ville road, when the northbound pas senger on the Southern came along and struck him. The fact that he was nearly off the track at the time, was all that saved him . Mr. Thomas Cobb, superintendent of the asylum farm near Columbia, died suddenly Monday morning of heart disease. Mr. Cobb was well known throughout Richland county and his death will prove a shock to his friends as be was apparently in best of health. He had occupied the position of overseer for twelve years and this fact alon<- speaks well of his ability. He was 75 years of age and leaves a wife and three children. Governor Heyward Tuesday acted favorably upon the petition for a par don for Harry Copeland, Gad send Abraham and Jeff Thomas, three ne groes who were convicted of man slaughter in Florence county in 18b9 and sentenced to life imprisonment. This action was taken because of the recommendation of tin- judge and so licitor and a large number of the jury that heard the case. It has been dis covered that the man who actually did the killing has since died in pris on. Mr. W. Scott Knight, well known I $12,000 capital. T. A. Wilbur is 1 president and Thos. S. Wilbur secre tary and treasurer. A charter was also issued the Arundale merchandise concern of Georgetown with $15,000 capital and also to the Kershaw Live stock Co., in Lancaster county, having $10,000 capital and J. T. Stevens as : president. Marlboro Fruit Co. noti fied the secretary of State of an in crease in the capital stock of from $2,100 to $10,000. I I While dashing up East Main street in Spartanburg Saturday night, hitch- 1 ed to the hose wagon, in response to ; the fire alarm, the two horses of the city fire department collided with pas senger train No. 10 on the S. U. & C. road at the railroad crossing, and as a result, one was killed outright and his body dragged about thirty feet down the track, while the other was fatally injured and died abotlt half an hour later. The gates at the crossing w ere up and the driver of the fire en gine thought the way was clear. The horses were valuable animals. A NEWSY LETTER FRUM ETTA JANE. Etta Jane, March 16.—The largest number of Camp Jefferies United Con federate Veterans who have assem bled there in several years met at Wilkinsville last Saturday, 12th in stant, according to announcement, and were called to order by Com mander G. Wash McKown, who ex plained the object of the meeting to be the election of officers for the en suing year, the payment of annual dues (15 cents per capita) and the COURT PROCEEDINGS. Civil Cases Passed Upon Since Tues day Morning. The jury to which the case of Phil-, lips vs. the Long Distance Telephone Co. was submitted Monday brought in a sealed verdict after the court ad journed. Tuesday morning when court con vened the sealed verdict was opened, and proved to be for the plaintiff in the sum of $100. The next case taken up was Love vs. Turner, the contention being for a tract of land and damages. This case occupied the time of the court till the middle of the afternoon, when the jury brought in a verdict for the plaintiff. Patrick Wallace, the young switch man who was run over by a shift- train in the Seaboard passenger yard in Charlotte Monday night, vhile alighting from a moving train to make a coupling, died Tuesday afternoon at 4:30, at St. Peter's Hospital in that city, where he was moved after th>» accident. Death was caused from the shock of the accident. He never ral lied sufficiently to withstand the am putation of both legs, which were bad ly crushed and mangled. The death of this young man is particularly sad and distressing. Mr. Knight was sit ting at the fire and had just assured his caller that he was getting on nicely when he suddenly collapsed and ex pired in a moment. Mr. Knight was fifty-four years old.
