persons—not including those tried
prison for life. Here is a man sent to
prison for life because be fought for
his life, but other men who have killed
their man under no provocation what
ever are allowed to go scot-free. Only
last week a verdict of manslaughter
was brought in against McCombs for
the killing of Inman. This was a case
in which a man kills another who was
about to attack him with a knife. The
verdict was just. McCombs could
have gotten away, but be preferred
to stand ids ground rather than to
show the white feather. He preferred
to kill his man rather than act the
coward, as he thought. It would
have been a much more manly and
courageous thing for him to have
walked on, or even run away from his
man. But he killed him and he will
be punished to some extent. In a
measure he will be made to suffer
for having violated the law of the
land. As for violating the law of
God, no man, no matter who, will be
able to escape the punishment that
a guilty conscience will inllict. We
do not cry out for the blood of Allen,
We lather rejoice because of his
wife ami family, that he has been ac
quitted. It will be a solace to their
aching hearts to know that their
kinsman Is not guilty. We don’t [‘°’ rb ! a
know whether he is guilty or not.
Only Allen and those who were pres
ent know whether or not he is guilty.
A mistake was made in the indict
ment. If the authorities had indicted
the negroes who were present when
the killing occurred they would prob
ably have told more about this ugly
affair than they did. There can be no
question but that they have concealed
something. We agree with Judge
Gage and Solicitor Henry In the theory
that Allen anl Phillips were so drunk
that they did not know what they
were doing, and that the negroes
were afraid to tell all they knew for
fear they might become implicated
or incur the wrath of the defendants
of their friends.
But what’s the use of writing on
this subject! The accused men have
been acquitted and it makes no diff
erence how guilty they may he, noth
ing can touch them but the hand of
at the present term of court—have
| been tried for murder, there have
been sixteen continuances, or a lit
tle more than half. Notwithstanding
the large number of continuances in
this county we have a better record
along that line than the majority of
the counties in the State. It must be
remembered, however, that Chero
kee inherited five cases of murder
from the old counties of Spartanburg
aud York, and that there have been
but twenty-six killings in this county
in seven years.
