C.. to serve for a period of two years, and until his successor is elected and qualified; also an Alderman for each of the six wards of the town of Gaffney, S. C., to serve for a term of two years, and until their successors are elected and qualified. Also an election is hereby ordered to he held on the same day for the purpose of electing a school trustee for school district 10, in Ward 2, of the town of Gaffney, S. C., to serve for a period of four years; also one from Ward 3 to serve for a period of four years; also one from Ward 4 to fill the unexpired term of L. G. If the old Dutch adage that “a M>od wheat crop follows a clear Ash> Wednesday,” be true, a good crop is assured to Cherokee this year. Wed nesriay was beautifully clear most of the day. Jeff Estes, of Etta Jane, came in to see 1 he Ledger Tuesday and showed os the foot of a fox he had caught hat morning. This is the first one caught in Cherokee this winter, and we learn that some outside men and togs were the principal factors in the race. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. W A. Harvey are glad of the im- oroved condition of the health of :heir family, and are glad to see their daughters, Misses Addie and Ruth, in 'h. ir places in the choir of the Chero kee Avenue Baptist church again. Mr George Garrett Byers left Wed nesday night for the northern mar kets to purchase spring goods for Carroll, Carpenter & Byers. He in tends to “lay in” the largest stock of any previous season, and the patrons j of this big establishment may expect some rare bargain*otfers in the near future. Our old friend, Govan Black, was in to see us Wednesday. He says *hilo wheat is backward he has hopes for the crops. He is a strong advo cate of diversified crops, and the raising of good hogs and cattle and hopes that the farmers will not go wild over cotton this year, but that they will raise plenty of corn and then all the cotton they can. There will be services at the Pres byterian church next Babbath at 11 a. m , and 4 p. m. This second ser vice in the afternoon is appointed to suit the convenience of all, and it is earnestly hoped that many will avail themselves of this opportunity to hear the gospel. Carpenter, on Limestone street, was a scene of loveliness and animation that would have lent inspiration to an artist’s brush and afforded a fit ting theme for a poet’s pen, tbe oc casion being a “valentine party” at which Mrs. Carpenter entertained quite a number of her lady [needs of the city and abroad. An accurate description of tbe ap pearance of this lovely home at the time would require a supply of ac- jectives and a flow of eloquence with which common mortals are not gifted, and only those who had tbe pleasure of being present can fully appreciate tbe ingenuity, taste andjartistic abil ity displayed by Mrs. Carpenter in arranging for the reception and pleasure of her guests. The color scheme was red and white—a beautiful and appropriate association of the tokens of peace and love—and these colors predomi nated throughout every feature of the event, even in the ornamental floral designs. The reception room was superbly decorated with ever greens dotted with red and white hearts which were pierced by arrows of the same colors. Over a table in the center of the room swung a handsome chandelier from wtrch were suspended by long red and white ribbons a multitude of small red and white hearts. These reached entirely to the table below, which was covered with red crepe paper with a large heart in the center, while a rich cut glass vase tilled with red carnations was placed on the heart and formed a resplendent setting for the crimson background. The dining-room was a perfect bower of dainty ferns and stately palms, the windows being draped with ivy in which were placed at ir regular intervals the same red and white symbols of the occasion—the emblems of peace and love joined to gether by Cupid’s arrow—while red and white candles shed a soft glow over the scene which “lent enchant ment to tbe view” of the assemoled guests and inspired in them a greater admiration for their charming hostess. A four-couree luncheon was served ; the ices and candies all being in heart shape and colored in red and white. The fruit punch was served in a very becoming manner by little Miss Sadie Carpenter. The souvenirs of tbe occasion were pretty heart- shaped valentines laced with baby ribbons of red and white, and each one containing an appropriate in scription. Mrs. Carpenter was assisted in entertaining her numerous guests by her sister, Mrs. J. N. Cudd, of Spar tanburg. Below is a list of tbe guests: Mesdames M. H. Jefferies, B. K Humphries, O. 8.
