Saturday appeared to be a busy day with Gaffney naerchants. Mrs Hattie Howard has accepted ; the position of clerk in the city post- office. Farmers are hauling large quanti ties of fertilizers out to their farms these days. Three trustees of the city schools will be elected at the municipal elec tion in March. Yesterday was a day to please the gods. It was warm, calm and as clear as a crystal. A good many people were making their property returns to County Auditor Camp yesterday. The present warm weather and the rain Sunday will make the wheat be gin to show, where there|is any in the fields. The smokestack at Col. Sam Jeffer- eries’ cotton gin and sawmill, on Buford street, near the railroad crossing, was h!o*n down Sunday afternoon. The Cherokeeaus came to the city Saturday in large numbers. Gener ally they appeared to be busy and to leave for home when they attended to their business. We are glad to state that Mrs. W. M. Maness and children, who had smallpox some time ago, have fully recovered, and have a physician’s certificate to the effect that they are entirely free from contagion. We were shown on Saturday by Mr. K.M.Woody an old bullet of good size that he found at Old Cambridge near Ninety Six. It had every appearance of having been used during the siege of that place during the Revolution. Mr. J. C. Coyle, who lives a few miles above the city, killed a nine teen weeks old pig last Friday that weighed 190 pounds. He says that some weeks towards the last,it gained much as fifteen pounds. He fed it as on buttermilk and bread. L. J. Hamrick, of Grassy Pond, was in to see us yesterday. He said he will hardly plant as much cotton this year as he did last year, but will continue to make his corn and meat. He also stated that he thought this was the general tendency of the farmers of his section. Mr. and Mrs. Z. A. Robertson and their children left the city yesterday afternoon for Merrittsville,Greenville county, where they go to join the family in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Mr. Robertson’s mother’s birthday. We bespeak for them a pleasant time, and wish for them the pleasure of joining their mother on many similar occasions in the future. Money To Loan! There was a severe electric storm here Sunday afternoon about 5 o’clock, accompanied by a severe wind, some hail and a heavy rainfall. The rain was the only heavy one we have bad since the Otb of last June when such great destruction of property was wrought ou Pacolet river. Only a little damage was done in the city, and up to this writing, we have not beard of any of consequence in the county. Uaffney’s Land Purchaae. The land on which Gaffney is built was granted to Charles Morgan by Gov. Charles Pinckney on March the 5tb, 1798. It was sold by Morgan to John Mc Kee on February thelOtb, 1808, and sold by McKee to Michael Gaffney, January 30tb, 1804. Gaffney bought 384 acres and paid $000 for it. This tract is occupied by the business por tion and most densely populated part of the city. Michael Gaffney after wards acquired thousands of acres in this section, but Gaffusy is ou and around bis original purchase. The house that Michael Gaffney built and lived in, still belongs to one of his name. It was remodeled about twenty years ago by his eldest grand son, Col. W. W. Gaffney, whose family still owns and lives in it. A MlHHlonnry Elected. It was adopted for the purpose of supplying the increased demand for insurance at low rates, It affords reliable insurance at a mini mum rate ; it gives what is equivalent to large dividends in ad vance—what ordinarily requires years to obtain under other plans. It is peculiarly adapted to those who want immediate protection, but are not ready or able to pay for endowment or other plans more expensive. All policies issued on this plan requiring to be renewed for a second, third, and fourth term of ten years have been so re newed for more than 35 years at the original rate, thus realizing the expectations of all interested. No other company can show such a record. See also the new 20 payment Life 5 year Dividend Policy of THE .ETNA. Will mature in 134 years if you leave the divi dends to accumulate.
