Beware of refilled bottles. A PROMISING CLEW IS FOUND. Detectives Admit Trail Is a Hot One, Though They Are Cautious About Divulging What the Circumstances Relating Thereto Are. Bedford. Ind., Feb. 3.—Detectives at work on the Schaefer murder mystery notiiied the city officials today that they had what they regard as the most promising clew yet found. What it is they have not fully told even the officials themselves, witu the possible exception of Sheriff Smith, who qTiietly left town early to day, leaving no information as to his movements. The search for the murderer has given rise to activity today in conse quence of the newly discovered clew. Detectives admit privately that the trail is a hot one. The man under suspicion is not a resident of Bedford, and is not in Bed ford at this time. He is not a tough, but is in easy circumstances. The authorities will not say that the suspect knew Miss Schaefer person ally, but admitted privately that an intimate friend of the suspect knew Miss Schaefer. It is learned that the detectives have been at work on the new 7 clew since yesterday afternoon, and are confi dent that it will lead to some results. The authorities are getting in every mail dozens of letters from clairvoy ants, cranks, people who have theo ries, dreamers and even threatening letters are being received. “No Such Thing ns Alternative Poli cy” Declares Redmond. London, Feb. ;!.—“For tht? Irisfc par ty there is no such thing as alterna tive policy to home rule,' declared John Redmond, the leader of the Irish parliamentary party in the bouse ot commons today as he resumed the de bate on the address in reply to the speech from the throne. Mr. Redmond proceeded in a speech ot great length to detail the various grievances of Ireland, incidentally in forming the Liberals that it was a de lusion to suppose they could count on Irish support by promising an alter native policy to home rule. Becai» ; the Irish obtained a valuable act last year remedying some of the evils of past government, some persons seem ed to think that the Irish question was shelved, but no concession could weak en the demand for self-government. Cincinnati’s Fire Consumed Half a Mil lion in Property. Cincinnati, Fob. 3.—A revised esti mate of the losses by last night’s fire at Front and Vine streets places the total loss at nearly half a million dol lars. The individual losers are; Great China Tea company, $lf>0,000. Lowroy & Goebel, carpet warehouse, $100,000. Herman Goeper company, kalsters, $50,000; buildings, $15,000. J. C. Korn, wholesale grocer, $5,000. Cole Bros., flour. $1,000. The insurance will average about 80 per cent of the loss. Bold Robbery In Chicago. Chicago, Feb. 3.—While a dozen terrified waitresses in a woman’s res taurant at 153 Michigan avenue shriek ed and fled from the leveled revolvers of two hold-up men, Miss N. E. Sum ner, the cashier resisted the efforts of a third thief to open the cash reg ister. The cashier, however, was forced at the point of a revolver and repeated blows to give up. The de lay caused by her struggle frightened the men and they fled after seizing only the money in the register, amounting to only about $90. Over $200 in bills had been placed on the desk near by. but had been swept to j the floor by Miss Sumner, where it was found after the robbery. Miss ; Sumner notified the police of the rob bery by telephone and when they ar rived was assisting in caring for sev eral of the girls who were hysterical from fright. Bryan's Visit Delayed. Feb. 3.—The will of the late Hugh Howell Scott, better known at ‘‘Henry Seaton Merriman,” novel ist, shows that he left an estate of $250,000, says a Times dispatch from London.
