G.—Not in the history of Lie present generation has the con dition in the Allegheny river been so alarming. The ice is gorged at intervals for nearly 50 miles. Almost continuous ly from Tarentum to Templeton, a distance sd' about 35 miles, the river bed is dotted with gorges ranging trom 5 to 15 leet in height. From Kittanning to Templeton, the center of the river is a great ridgl of ice 5 feet high, while trom ridge to hank the river is frozen solid with 16 inches of ice. Prompt Action Probably Prevented a Lynching. Denver, Jan. 6.—Prompt action on the part of the police probably has prevented an attempt to lynch the three slayers of Mrs. Youngblood — Peters, Andrews and Arnold. A mob of about 1,300 people gathered at Val- verde and began a march on the jail. Chief Armstrong learned of the movement early and sent the prison ers to Colorado Springs. He then sent a lorce of police to intercept the mob. In some manner the mob. learned of this action on tho part of the police and it turned back to Valverde and dispersed. Jackson, Miss., Jan. 6.—The senate today by a vote of 31 to 1 passed a resolution instructing the Mississippi senators to vote for the Panama canal treaty. The resolution now goes to tho house for action, as it is a concur rent one. It will probably pass the house. The governor's message was read in both branches at noon. It is a lengthy document, and deals with state matters. He deprecates the lynching of negroes, and makes a plea for an observance of the law and leav ing the dealing of criminals to the courts. Death of Mrs. Hammersly. New York, Jan. 6.—Mrs. Margaret Hammersly. widow of James Hooker Hammersly, is dead at her home 111 Fifth avenue. She was a member of a prominent North Carolina family and was a grand niece of William Au gustus Muhlenberg, the famous Pro testant Episcopal preacher and writer It is possible her death may again in volve the Hammersly millions in liti gation, owing to the conditions of the trust which cut off, owing to religious differences, the child of the present Lady Beresford, widow of Louis Ham- mersley.
