H Gaines, of this city, car ried some of his fine fowls to the North Carolina Poultry show at High Point, N. 0 , last week, and placed them on exhibit. Mr. Gaines has some beautiful birds which he raised on his poultry farm at this place; and after winning prizes in Columbia, 'hey have now gained new honors in t he OldJNorth State. The prizes awarded them at High i Point were as follows: One 1st prize; three 2nd prizes; two (3rd, and four. 4’h. The strains Mr. Gaines had on exhibit were White Plymouth Rocks and Black Langshans, and a finer looking collection of domestic fowls would be difficult to find Besides , the premiums mentioned above, oth tr prizes have been awarded them, as j follows: A year's subscription from the Fanciers Guide, Beaver Springs, j Pa., for the second best pair of Lang- j shans ;same from the Poultry Tribune, Freeport. The annual report of the superin tendent of the penitentiary shows the following interesting statistics: Total receipts, $91,030 50; expendi ture for permanent improvement $5,800; balance $28,815 13. There are now 697 convicts in the , prison; 48 in the reformatory and 85 are serving sentences on the county chaingang.
