Mobile, Ala., Dec. 30.—(Policeman Charles Haggerty was .shot and in stantly killed early today by an un known white man whom he had under arrest. The murderer escaped, and has not been captured. The killing occurred in the heart of tho city with, in a block of the police station, and was witnessed by one man, who can give only a vague description of tbt slayer. Hopkins, the St. Ix>uis theatrical manager, has purchased the Music Hall In this city and will con vert it into a vaudeville theater, llap kins’ theater in the old Masonic Tem ple was recently destroyed by fire, and since then the proprietor and his as sociates have been looking for a new Louisville theater. M„ Dec. 30.—The Highland hotel, one of the finest win ter resorts in New Mexico, has been destroyed by lire. Several invalids at the hotel had narrow escapes, but there were no casualties. The loss is $00,000. Woman Shot by Burglar. Charlotte, N. C., Dec. 30.—A negro burglar entered the home of John K. Orr 2 miles from this city, and discov ering Mrs. Orr alone, sihot her, per haps fatally, and then ransacked the house.
