Birmingham, Ala., Dec. 16.—At to- lays session of the United Mine Workers of America, district of Ala bama. a resolution was adopted abol ishing semi-annual conventions and ,/roviding for but one state convention annually, to be held in Juno preceding the expiration of the annual wage con tracts on July 1. President Flynn in reviewing the difficulties which the Miners’ union has had to cope with in prosecuting strikes, employing lawyers to defend members who were arrested, etc., said that it had been necessary within the past six months to secure $10,000 from the national body. He said that the strikes at Virginia City, Aldrich and Cordova are now costing the organiza tion about $1,700 per month. Dec. 16.—Charged with the murder of Ada Cay, the young woman whose half-decomposed body was found in a creek near Lithonia last Sunday, Bob Harper was arrest ed at his home at Porterdale Monday evening by Sheriff Sam Hay and im mediately carried to Conyers to be held for further investigation. Harper is a middle-aged man and has a wife and eight children. For the past sever?i years he has been a la borer in the cotton factory at Porter dale. The description of the dead woman tallies precisely with the (description of a woman with whom he has been seen several times, and it is strongly believed that he is the perpetrator ot the crime. Women's “Syndicate Dinners.” A young society matron of Philadel phia has instituted a novel sort of din ner. Ten young women have formed themselves into a sort of club, the mis sion of which is to give a very elab orate dinner once a month. The din ners arc held at the different members’ houses, but the hostess provides the servants and the flow -s only. The novelty of the club is in the way the food is provided. Each girl is intrusted with one course of the menu. It is her duty to decide what it shall be and arrange with the cook as to how she wishes it to be served.
