Again, from a political point of view Cherokee county should not desire such an alliance. The voting popu lation of Spartanburg county more than doubles that of Union and Cbt-ro kee combined, so that in matters of local interest affecting the circuit, Spartanburg would always control. If a solicitor is to be elected, Spar tanburg county could easily, and probably would elect a Spartanburg man, and this U equally true in the event there should be a vacancy on the bench to bo filled. Taking all things into consideration we propose that our circuit shall be composed of the counties of Chester, Cherokee, Lancaster and York. Let Spartanburg remain with her ancient associates. T. B. Butler for the defence in the Westmoreland- Carpenter case last Friday was an ap peal to reason. Ho took the evidence and analyzed It with a frankness that was commendable. While the other attorneys on both sides made credit able speeches,they indulged in a good deal of jest and extravagance; but Mr. Butler’s argument was filled with reason, void of abuse, and altogether appropriate. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ That was indeed a sad affair over in Spartanburg Friday night when Albert Dearman was shot by Albert Thompson. The shooting occurred over a game of cards. Both are young men about twenty years of age. It matter not if Dearman recovers, the stain of bis blood will be on the bands of Thompson so long as be lives, for the assault was murderous.
