SYMPATHY FOR CRIMINALS.
The refined and chivalrous senti
ments of the whole State of Georgia
have recently received a severe shock
because a warden in the btate peni
tentiary gave an obstreperous woman
prisoner a decent, or indecent flog
ging. The knightly spirit of the
State rose in indignant protest against
such inhuman barbarity to a defence
less woman and it seemed for a while
that Warden Allagood and prisoner,
Mamie DeCris, would have to ex
change places in the penitentiary, if
indeed the warden should escape the
shdrt shrift and the conventional
“riddling” of bullets.

The severity of English laws has
been greatly mltigaced in modern
times. But in England today, when
a man commits a capital crime, he is
condemned or acquitted inside of ten
days after the commission of the
crime; and if condemned, there is no
appeal, except in some rare instances
to the Home Secretary. An Ameri
can woman in England poisoned her
husband some fifteen years ago, and
was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In obedience to that same maudlin
sentiment in America which is horri
fied at the whipping o Mamie DeCris,
heaven and earth have almost been
moved to secure her pardon, but Mrs.
May brick is still in durance vile and
likely to remain so till she pays the
fell penalty of her atrocious crime.
