This is a movement in the right direction. It has always been a strange thing to us why people will hesitate to build good roads, streets and sidewalks when that is about ail they can ever hope to get out of the taxes they pay. Let everybody turn out to the good roads convention and let us all take an interest in it. Blacksburg, Aug. 10.—Rev. J. C. Johns, of Rock Hill, held services and preached yesterday morning ana eve ning in the Episcopal church. The church has been closed since the last of May, when the rector, Rev. G. C. Williams, left for a European tour, being accompanied by Mrs. Williams, a bride of only a few months. After a very satisfactory and most enjoy able trip, during which they visited many places of interest in Ireland, Scotland, England and France, Mr. and Mrs. Williams returned this morning in perfect health. Dr. and Mrs. William Wright and their son, Master Lloyd, left this morning for their home, St. Louis, after a pleasant visit to Mrs. Wright’s sister, Mrs. Otis Osborne, of this place. It is also a state in which nearly every foot of ground lias histor ic associations, and this fact, together with its glorious landscapes, makes it an unusually interesting state to visit. There are thousands of resorts, each of whleh has its own special attractions, but none has attracted more visitors than the resorts in the vicinity of the Great Natural Bridge, which is one of the natural wonders of the United States. This marvelous structure overlooks the .Tames river valley, being on the western slope of the Blue mountains. It is Just about the center of the state. It approaches Niagara in grandeur and exceeds it in height and awful mystery. It is a single block of limestone, with many shades of color. The walls are smooth, as If cut with chisels, and there is no sign of displacement. The visitor follows a tumbling cas cade down a deep Assure in the moun tain under some of the largest arbor vit:r> trees in the world and, turning down a line of steps cut Into the preci pice, suddenly finds himself by a swift stream in a dark canyon and the great bridge far above him. Birds high in air pass under the blue arch. The place is full of echoes, aud the winds and waters moan eternally. Washington when a surveyor for Lord Fairfax visited the natural bridge and carved his name, where it may still be seen. The original bridge tract was granted by King George III. to Thomas Jefferson in 1774. After he was president Jefferson visited the place, surveyed it and made the map with his own hands. Jefferson spoke of the place as “a famous place that will draw the attention of the world.” Chief Justice Marshall wrote of the bridge as “God’s greatest miracle iu stone.” Henry Clay wrote of “the bridge not made with bands that spun a river, carries a highway and makes two mountains one.” — Detroit Free Press.
