vilayet of Monastir.

Intervention of Powers Can Alone Pre
vent Disaster.
Sofia, Bulgaria. August 12.—The Bul
garian foreign office has received very
disiiuieting news from its ageut at Us
kub. The Mussulmans there are daily
gathering in the mosque, and it is fear-
eli that a massacre of the Christians
Is impending.
Officials here express the belief that
tbe intervention of the powers alone
can prevent a disaster.
The most astonishing feature of the
situation here is the remarkable quiet
ude with which the people have re
ceived the news of the fresh fighting
in Macedonia. The whole outbreak
came as a great surprise even to tho
local revolutionary committees, which
are not prepared for so early a rising.
In spite of the stirring appeals of the
committees, little or no popular enthu
siasm is apparent, not even among the
20,000 Macedonian residents of Sofia.
How long this condition will last de
pends upon the rfevelopments in Mace
donia. At present the center of the
phenomenon of country life that a man
always thinks the road he lives on is
very good or at least, not so bad ns
some others.
| As tbe bicycle helped along the good
cause, so will the automobile or the
traction carriage. Automobillsts want
better roads.
Every farmer should help a little by
using broad tired wheels. These wheels
not only do not rut the roads, but help
to maintain them. A broad tired wheel
ought to bear more weight without
strain than one with a narrow’ tiro.
There is no more friction in the use
of a broad tire on a smooth road than
in the use of a narrow tire on a rough
one. A committee of automobillsts, re
porting recently on New’ York roads,
said:
“It is worse than useless to create
expensive and valuable highways only
to have them cut to pieees by the use
