Warsaw. Ind., July 28.—Four open
air platform meetings have been ar
ranged to be held in the Auditorium
at Winona lake during the meeting
of the executive committee of the In
ternational Sunday School association,
which convenes in a five days’ annual
session on Thursday. Aug. 6. All these ’
meetings will be in charge of the exec
utive committee.
One of the most important questions
that will be considered will be that of
co-operation with the theological sem
inaries. colleges and universities, and
the best means of co-operating with
young people’s organizations, such as
the Christian Endeavor. Epwortli
League, Baptist Young People’s Union
ami kindred societies.
Marion Lawrence, the general secre
tary of the International association,
will address the gathering on the “Or
ganized Work of the International Con
vention.’’ Other addresses will be
made by Rev. Dr. N. H. Hamill, presi-
dent of the board of education of the
Southern Baptist convention, and Rev.
Dr. John Potts, of Toronto, chairman
of the international Lesson committee,
who will speak on ’’Twentieth Century
Sunday School Ideas." Secretaries
Pierce, Sheppard, Marcus, Mrs. Barnes
and Mrs. Bryner will give “Glimpses
of the International Field.” Among
other prominent workers on the pro
gram are W. N. Hartshorn, chairman
of the international executive com

The Kenrsarge, which has broken all
records for speed of battle ships sus
tained for long distances and which
won the admiration of Emperor Wil
liam of Germany and the Prince of
Wales and several admirals in Eng
land, was launched from the yards of
the Newport News Shipbuilding and
Dry Dock company. Newport News,
Ya., at 10.02 a. m. t March 24, 1808, and
at 11.32 her sister ship, the Kentucky,
glided into the James river, says the
New York Tribune. The dimensions
of the two vessels are identical—water
line length, 368 feet; beam, 72 feet 2 1 i>
inches; draft, 22 feet 5 inches; free
board, forward, 14 feet 3 inches; free
board, aft, 3 inches; displacement. 11,-
525 tons.
The speed requirements were 10
knots. On her preliminary trial the
Kcarsarge made ITH knots, and the
Kentucky on her trial the same. Some
doubt exists as to which ship is the
faster. The Kearsarge ranks as one
of the most formidable fighting ships
in the world. She is armed with four
13 inch and eight 4 inch breechload
ing rifles and fourteen 5 inch rapid
firing guns. There are twenty G pound
ers, six 1 pounders, four (’olt rapid lire
boat guns and four 18 inch torpedo
tubes.

President Roosevelt is about to take
up cricket as an antidote for listfess-
ness, says tlie New York World. The
sport offers peculiar attractions to a
man devoting the time and attention
he does to sports. For some time back
he has studied overhand howling and
guarding of wickets, and the Hunting-
ton (N. Y.) Manor club, near the presi
dent’s home, will see his debut on the
cricket field. Several of his friends
have been instructed by a British pro
fessional and the first match between
picked teams of tlie home club is being
looked forward to by the president and
his neighbors. President Roosevelt is
credited witli being a good player for a
beginner. ,

val, a well known savant of the Psy
chological institute of Paris, says the
New York World. At a recent ufoeting
of the institute he made an exhaustive
address on "The Action of Electricity
Upon Human Beings.” He showed that
electric treatment is excellent for cer
tain maladies of the skin and that
electricity lias a powerful effect on
microbes and accelerated circulation
and respiration without fatigue to the
person operated on. Moreover, what is
most important, he said it acts strong
ly on cellular vitality.

Striking Firemen Cause Temporary
Suspension of Traffic.
Detroit, July 29.—All the street car
lines iu the city were tied up for more
than two hours this morning at the
time travel is usually heaviest, by a
strike of 35 firemen at the powerhouse
of the Detroit United railway. The
rnen struck to enforce a demand for
an 8-hour day.
Outside help was rushed to the
rowerhouse and by 8 o’clock the com
pany had a fow cars running on most
of the lines. At 8 o’clock throe of the
firemen had returned to work, while
the others were endeavoring to get
the engineers to join them in their
►trike. Thousands of people were late
in getting to their work this morning
owing to the strike and tie-up.

on the line to Lincoln park, 4 miles
west of the city.
Two negro women, Sue Wilson and
Rutnie Anne Cuthhert, were instantly
killed and 12 other negroes were in
jured, two possibly fatally.
The trolley car had 2(1 passengers,
all negroes. Most of them were huck
sters jeturning from the city to their
places. The car stopped upon the
crossing and the freight train back
ed into it.
For nearly 150 feet along the track
the street car was carried, to then be
thrown into a ditch, where five of the
freight cars were piled upon it.
The dead and dying lay all along
the track from the point where the
car was struck to that where it lay
in the ditch. The inquest has not
keen held.
There have been no arrests.
• The crew of the street car 'declare
the freight crew was responsible for
_ the accident, while the freight crew
declare that all signals were given
and that it was a result of the grogs
negligence of the car men.

Judge Little Reappointed.
Atlanta, July 29.—Governor Terrell
yesterday settled the contest over the
judgeship of the city court of Hancock
by reappointing Judge Frank H. Little,
the incumbent. Judge Little is one
of the best known men in his section
ol the state and has many friends
