Uirmirgham, Ala., July 1.—'All tnr miners who are members of the Unit etl Mine Workers of America to the nuuilje. - of about 13,000 in this district suspended work today, the old wag? contract having expired last night auu a new contract not having been agree) upon. No formal strike lias boon de-, dared, the situation being referred to as a suspension. This status will presumably iinaintaja until an agreement is reached on a new wage scale. When the final session of the joint convention of the miners and operators came to an end last evening with failure to agree on a new wage scale, it was adjourned sub ject to the call of the chairman who is Edward Flynn, president of the mi nets. No call for another meeting has been issued, and there is no immedi ate prospect of a renewal of the ef forts to settle. It is not believed that anything will he attempted until next week at the earliest. Moth sides are standing firm, but there is a very widespread feelin; that negotiations will be renewed in the neat future. As work is slach at the industries and the weather Is very warm, there Is no disposition on the part of either side to press mat ters. AH' is quiet at the mines. Con vlct mines are running, as are also those few mines where union labor i- not employed. Cincinnati, O., July 1.—Prominent Kentucky educators and college pres idents have met here and formed an association which they firmly believa will develop a wide reaching influence and importance in the state and pos sibly beyond the limits of that state. The inter-collegiate assoeaition of Kentucky was formed, although th<3 ccaustitution and by-laws are still to bo formulated and adopted. Those attending the meeting said that the recent scenes of disorder anii bloodshed in mountain districts had hastened, if not originated the move ment to have the leading institution- of the kind in the state in closer touch, that more earnest effort and wider scope of attainment might mark the educational work of Kentucky.
