Shuford, a prominent photogia- pher of Gastonia, N. C., went to Clifton Sunday to see the ruins. He spent yes terday in the city and went to Pacolet in the afternoon. He met many old friends here who w ere glad to see him. Baxter McAbee, a bright Ledger boy, went home Saturday afternoon and took twenty-three pounds of honey out of a bee gum. He says it was his gum. Jasper Wright came up to the city yesterday. T. M. Littlejohn, of Star Farm, made a business trip to the city yesterday. Mr. W. T. Gregory, a prominent busi ness man of Lancaster, came up to the city Friday accompanied by his daugh ters, Misses Lillian and Sadie, and his nieces, Misses Ola and Kstell Gregor)’. While in the city they were the guest of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Johnson on Freder ick ttreet. W. S. Hall, Esq., went to Chester Fri day on professional business. Smith Williams, of Blacksburg, spent sometima in the city Friday. Sidney Poag, one of Gaffney’s bright young hoys, went to Rock Hill Saturday on a visit. Wofford Price, of Ezell, paid The Led ger an appreciated visit yesterday. Peyton Price was a Ledger visitor yesterday. O. P. Richardson, who has been at tending college in Virginia, is at his home in the city for the holidays. John V. Price came to the city yester day on business. Miss Annie Lou Smith, who has been teaching at the V illiams school-house, left the city yesterday for her home at Baton Rouge, in Chester county. P. S. Webber came to the city yester day. A. S. Smith was in the city yesterday. Albert McKown spent some time in the city yesterday. Mr. John Estes, of Etta Jane, was in the city yesterday. He says many bales of cotton have been caught about Skull Shoals, also that many pieces of furn iture washed from the houses at Clifton are being found and cared for by the peo ple who hope that it and the cotton can be returned to the owners. Mr. J. W day. He was appalling. Many bales of cotton lodged there. Arrested In Freight Cars. Sunday afternoon while playing near the Southern depot Deputy Sheriff Bar- ! nett Lipscomb got an inkling that all was | not right inside two freight cars that were on the yard. Upon investigation he J found two white boys in one car, and as- | certaining that a negro man was in anoth er he left some men to guard the car the ; negro was in and carried the boys and put them in jail. He then went hack andgot the negro and placed him in juikHe gave his name as Andrew Brown lived in Spartanburg. Both the cars | were loaded and the entrance to them 5 had been made, in both cars, through a small window in the end of the cars and some of the packages had been broken into, but if anything had been sent off by outside pals it could not be ascertained. The negro and boys were carried before Magistrate Speer yesterday and he recom mitted them to jail in default of bond for their appearance at court next Mon day. / .Summer Weather. The train from Charlotte Sunday was crowded with people going to see the ruins at Clifton. While the local telephone wires are j allO. Peeler & Randall’s sawmill and wood working plant which they have nearly completed on the east side of Broad river just above Gaston Shoals, was considera bly damaged by the freshet, but not so much but they think they can soon re pair the damages. We hope they are not seriously damages. They are hard work ing and deserving young men. Every available team in the city was put in use Sunday morning by people going to Clifton and Pacolet mills to see the ruins which the flood had made there !ind more than a hundred crowded into the already crowded tniin Sunday evening and went over. They all re turned subdued by awe and say the scene simply beggars description. The county summer school for teach ers will convene this year on the 15th of July, in this city in graded school build ing No. 1. Prof. W. F. McArthur has been appointed principal of the school and ex-Senator Sarratt will be his as sistant . Friday morning Rev. R. H. Morse, an evangelist and tern iterance lecturer of Charlotte N. C., arrived in the city and in a short time began to preach on the streets. Mayor Little ordered an officer ! to arrest him and make him put up $25.00 for his appearance or lock him up. Mr. Morse did not put up the money ami was promptly locked up in a cell in the city prison. His dinner was sent to him by a lady, and a friend hearing of his imprisonment put up the money for him and he was released. Immediately upon his release the manager of the Star Thea tre offered the house to him to hold his meetings in. Saturday morning Mr. Morse appeared at the mayor’s court and was discharged without penalty by the mayor, whp said he ordered the arrest under authority of a city ordinance prohibiting street preaching. W hen Mr. Morse was arrested a rip- 1 pie of disapproval went all over the city, and many expressions of regret were I heard and many re r erences were made to | fakirs, who, for a pittance, have been al lowed to sell their worthless goods and work their thieving tricks on our I streets for days at a time, and at times 1 almost obstructing the streets with the 1 crowds that gather around them.
