The facts as learned from an au
thentic source are as follows: The
lady’s name was Bell, wife Mr. W.
W. Bell, a lineman of the Postal Tele
graph company. Mr. Bell is engagtd
in regulating the line of bis company
which passes through this place and
close to the line of the Southern rail
way in some places. Tuesday morn
ing he started out to inspect the line
from Spartanburg up towards Gaff
ney, and Mrs. Bell accompanied him
in a buggy. At different points along
the line Mr. Beil would get out of tne
buggy to attend to bis work, Having
his wife to do the driving. At one of
these times they were close to the
railroad track and at a crossing of the
dirt road. Mrs. Beil attempted to
drive across, either not being aware
of the apnroHChiog of a train, or
thinking jhe could get over ahead
of io; out jut-t as the buggy got on
the track t he locomotive of a north
bound freight train was almost upon
the un’ortuna e woman. She tried
to baca the horse off; but the animal
was no doubt frightened, and instead
of either backing or going straight
across he started to run down the
track, directly towards the engine,
it seems. The locomotive struck the
animal, killing him instantly, tore
the vehicle to pieces and dashed Mrs.
Bell to the ground, breaking one of
her legs and fracturing her skull.
The badly injured woman was
take to a house near the scene of the
accident and medical aid summoned,
and everything possible was done to
alleviate her suffering.
When heard from last, which was
yesterday morning, Mrs. Bell was
still alive, though slight hopes were
entertained for her recovery.
To Flay Hall at Spartanburg.
The Gaffney Baseball Club will go
to Spartanburg tomorrow to cross
bats with Tucapau on the Wofford
College ball ground. This will be the
first engagement of the Gaffney team
this season, and it is predicted that
the boys will acquit themselves with
credit. Capt. Hopper has his men in
good shape and they will do their
best to return home with the scalps
of thej Tucapau’s dangling from the
belts of the Cherokees.
Things Theatrical.
Mr. Harry C. Knox on last Tues
day purchased the interests of Messrs.
Walter Baker and Ed. H. DeCsmp in
the H. C. Knox Co., who have been
managing the 8tar Theatre the past
season. Mr. Knox has also acquir
ed the theatre in Blacksburg and will
conduct both houses next season,
devoting his whole time to the busi
ness of theatricals and bill posting.
For the coming season ho has already
booked some of the best attractions
on the road and theatre goers may
look forward with pleasant anticipa-
tioiis for a good season.
The first performance under the
sole direction of Mr Knox takes place
on Monday, May 25th, when the
Wages musical family will be at the
Star Theatre. The following regarding
this troupe may prove of interest to
theatre goers:
