Judge Scruggs will have an impor tant case before him at Ezells tomor row. Rowan Jennings is building a cot tage on one of his lots near the Victor oil mill. Fair weather advances work in all lines of business except in the State rum shop. Mrs. D. P. Sides gathered two gal lons of English peas from her garden on the 4th instant. Chester and Newberry counties, fol lowing Cherokee’s lead, have bought good roads machinery. A good attendance is expected at the meeting of Jake Carpenter (Tamp U. C. veterans tomorrow. Farmers have been busy this week. The few who come into the city want rain to bring up the crops. All the old fishermen on the river say that fishing is still poor—the dam at Columbia has cut them all oil. A good number of Cherokee county veterans will attend the reunion in Columbia next week. Most of them will leave here on the 9 a. m. train on Tuesday the I2th. This week has been too good a one to work for the farmers to be much in evidence in the city. Those who came were on business bent which kept the business in the city up to normal. Mr. Tankersley McArthur, of this place, has succeeded Mr. C. R. Gray as ticket agent here. “Tank” suc ceeds a most efficient man, but he is allright, and will measure up to the duties of his office. Mr. Clabe Hopper will leave the city tomorrow with his teams and grading outfit for Clinton, Laurens county, to grade a site for a new cot ton mill and side tracks from the railroad to the mill site. Miss Christine Goudelock and Miss Louise Jefferies, both of this city, have been appointed sponsor and maid of honor for Camp Jefferies U. C. Veterans, and will accompany the camp to the reunion in Columbia. A Ledger man had the pleasure of riding in a rubber-tired buggy be hind one of the Gaffney Live 6tock Company's dashing bays the other afternoon. The novelty of the rubber- tired buggy was not new, neither was it anything new to ride behind a dash ing bay, but it is so seldom a fellow gets to ride with so genial a gentle man as Mr. Conder, and at the in stance of Mr. Johnson, that it was worth noting. O. P. Hill, manager of the county home, brought us a handful of wheat four feet, six inches high, yesterdaj, from a six acre field he has on the farm at the home, which he says is the average height of the crop in the field. This is a good sample for any season, but with so mupy fields look ing so poor this spring it is remark able. Perry was a good farmer when be worked his own farm, and we are glad ho is succeeding for the county The protracted meeting at Buford Street Methodist church is still going on with two services each day. Mt. Steadman is being assisted by the ministers of the other churches. Good congregations attend each ser vice and an encouraging interest Is being manifested. There will be ser vices today and tomorrow at 4:80 p. m; special sermon to children. Sermon Sunday morning for parents. AM persons are cordially Invited to attend these services. The court house boys are putting on a good many “lugs” these days. Besides moving around and painting and renovating ir general the Gaffney Telephone Co., has placed an electric call system in Clerk of Court Jefferies’ office, so that in the future persons wishing to communicate with any of ficial in the court house will be en abled to do so without much delay, except in the case of Col. Camp, who will get there just the same if you give him ample time. Gaffney has a number of lawn ten nis enthusiasts, and almost any after noon they can he seen on the several courts in different sections of the town. There is a beautiful court on the lot adjoining Mr. 8. L. Hopper, on Logan street, and this is the most popular one, but there are also ex cellent courts in front of Mr. J. 1). Goudelock’s and at the graded school grounds. Home of the players are becoming quite proficient. The game is healthful, innocent and amusing.
