The La test Thing* In Gownn »n«l Millinery for Spring »n«l Hummer. Eton jackets reappear and this ir repressible little garment is in such gradations as to suit everyone. Long coats rival Etons in variety of mate rial used, but the same can hardly be asserted in regard to jackets in cloth that run from twenty-four to twenty- eight inches in length. Between them and long coats come three-quar ter and even longer styles. Monte Carlo coats however, are most in de mand and come in cloth, silk lined or uniined, and as a special novelty may be noted examples in canvas and other goods on the same order, some very dressy and in light colors. The newest feature in out door garments is that of shoulder capes, appearing however chiefly in Monte Carlo and other coats. In the I>KICSSMAKERS CONVENTION now being held, special account is taken of the fit of corsages and in view of this, use is made of the Rosa lind waist adjustor, which gives the fashionabl j curve. It can be used with a belt of any material and no al teration of skirt is required. As an encouraging sign of the times, more over. such dressing as shall permit ac tivity in women, while compelling a correct attitude, has been a prime consideration. To these ends the belted hose supporter is a powerful aid, since it throws out the chest, flattens the back and induces that Venus like carriage which is so charming to all beholders. NEW GOWNS Women being no longer the housed up creatures they were, great import ance is attached to garments that in pure wool, shall withstand assaults of rain and sun bine and therefore in ready made gowns, the Wooltex method of construction is steadily growing more popular; this the more so, because the wool gown for out door wear, is now a recognized neces sity at all seasons of the year. On some dresses, shoulder capes are a notable finish and one destined to be come more fashionable as the season progresses. Bkirts in general are not so differjnt from those of last season but what the latter will bear favorable comparison with those dis tinctively of this spring. And here again, it is noteworthy that tne handsomest on exhibition, show in finish the new S. H <& M. velvet braid skirt protector, which, leavingout of quest in its superior appearance, is also preferred by dressmakers, be cause it can be attached only by one sewing. Time is saved in conse quence, and moreover, ladies appre ciate the fact that with its use they can avoid defacement of foot-wear, a neat shoe being, of course, a prime consideration. Returning to c irsages, it car tie added that on the dressiest examples ornate trimmings in bertha style are very prominent and the latest introduction is drawn work in many beautiful varieties. Judging from the displays in the shops it is evident that CHE PETTICOAT is to be greatly in evidence, and gra dations run from the comparatively simple up to styles oppressively elaborate and manifestly intended for exhibition. The new Sorosis petticoat in high grade mercerized satine has been received with great favor. Numerous styles are shown, so that everyone can find something appropriate, and thus they ate chosen,, not only by economical women, but by those of liberal ideas. Every seam Is strapped inside and outside so that dust cannot collect, and all wrinkles around the waist line are obviated by a demi yoke. Thus they conform to the straight front and the dress skirt fits per fectly over them. MILLINERY Low dressed hair being prevalent, a fine net has been brought out for the back hair and is fast becoming popular. Shapes in bats, of course, WOMEN AND SOCIETY. conform to hair dressing: there is method in the madness of the mani fold upturaings, involutions and con volutions of the day, and most beau tifying variations are the result. In view of great size, the use of very light weight material continues, but ribbons and scarfs as well, are so lovely and in such range of texture and finish that both are frequently noticeable, the former placed in large bows chiefly, and the latter giving a graceful finish at the back. Small flowers are much oftener seen than large ones, and among novelties may be mentioned honeysuckles and fnohalas. Lucy Carter. A Thouiflitful Mau. M. M. Austin, of Winchester. The pleated and tucked skirts which are always close fitting around the hips mur-t flare out at the bottom. Short skirts are de regie for all walking and traveling costumes, the length just clearing the ground being the most becoming as a rule. Miss Addie McArthur, of Winthrop College, spent Sunday at home with her parents. Mrs. Syd Walker went to Rock Hill Saturday to spend Easter with her daughter, Miss Mignon, who is at Winthrop College. Mrs. A. N. Wood has gone to Che- raw to visit her mother, Mrs. Stobo Farrow. Mrs. Rosa Roundtree is spending this week with her friend, Mrs. Geo. Blanton, in Shelby. Mrs. Butler is expected home this week from Shelby, where she has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Blanton. Mrs. R. M. Gaffney has returned from a pleasant visit to Wilkinsville. Mrs. Walter Hopkins, of Concord, N. C., is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lynch, on Logan street. Mrs. Hopkins is pleasantly remembered here as Miss Alma Lynch. Friday afternoon Mrs. J. A. Car- roll entertained her lady friends, as sisted by her daughters, Mrs. A. C Cree and Mrs. G. G. Byers. This hospitable home never looked more inviling than on this occasion. As the guests entered the hall and were greeted by the receiving party, they were ushered into a fairy-like grotto in Japanese colors, a booth banked in with dogwood blossoms ai d presided over by Mrs Boyd Hames, who, dres sed in the Jip costume, was serv ing tea. The grotto was dimly lighted by numbers of little can dles which made a perfect picture. Next came the dining-room, where ail was an Easter greeting. In the centre of the ro >m was a beautifully decorated table with a smilax gar land from the four corners to the chandelier, caught at the base with Easter lilies, an.t a cut glass cande labra with colored lights cast a glow over little eggs and rabbits nestling in the green below. On each individ ual table were candies and flowers. A luncheon was served by the fol lowing young ladies: Misses Edna Sarratt, Helen Browhawn, Inez Bar ratt, EvaSams and Effie Hopper ;after which followed dainty ices of Easter lilies and rabbits, which made the effect perfect. As the ladies departed, bidding their charming hostess adieu, they were given fancy colored candy eggs as souvenirs of this most pleasant occasion. Robbed the Grave. A startling incident is narrated by John Oliver, of Philadelphia, as fol lows: “I was in an awful condition. My skin was almost yellow, eyes sunken, tongue coated, pain contin ually in back and sides, no appetite, growing weaker day by day. Three physicians bad given me up.
