The new shirt-waists are veritable
triumphs of the modiste’s skill aud
cuoning. Embroidery occupies an
important place among the season’s
decoratior.s, and blouses of white
flannel or cashmere are lavishly elab
orated in black and white Corticelii

fancy stitches. A tucked yoke that
was in pointed outline at the center
of the front was the characteristic
feature of the shaping of a waist of
this order, that was made to accom
pany a Norfolk suit.

THE CANTATA CHORUS.
It Is Full Underway and the Mfinhemir
Highly Knthuaen.
The chorus for the cantata, Esther,
is well underway, great enthusiasm
is manifested by the memners, and
many have already committed their
parts. Those interested in the suc
cess of the cantata had their hopes
satisfied when they heard the rehear
sal of Tuesday night; the music is
inspiring and pleasing, and Prof.
Maxim Uas them fully under control.
A little explanation may be neces
sary concerning Esther, and Mor-
decai, and Hainan, aud how, in the
reign of Artaxerxes, the whole nation
of the Jews was in danger of perish
ing. The king gave orders to certain
persons to choose out of the virgins
that were in his kingdom those that
were esteemed the most comely. 80
when a great number of these virgins
were gathered together, there was
found a damsel whose name was
Esther. 8be being a Jew, was most
beautiful of all the rest; she was
brought up with her uncle Mordec&i.
When Esther appeared before the
king, he was pleased with her and
made her his wife. 8ome time after
the marriage, two eunuchs plotted
against the king. A servant of one of
tne eunuchs, by birth a Jew, made
known the consoiracy to the queen’s
uncle, Mordecai, and be, hy means of
Esther made it known to the king;
this troubled the king, but he dis
covered the truth and hanged the
eunuchs upon a cross, while at that
time he gave no reward to Mordecai.
Now there was one Hainan, the
son of Hammedatha, that used to go
into the king. All the foreigners and
Persians worshiped him as Artaxerxes
had commanded, but Mordecai was
so wise and observant of bis own
country’s laws that he would not
bow down to the man. This made
Haman indignant and he not only
commanded that Mordecai be killed
but the whole Jewish race. This of
coarse meant death to the queen.
Esther sent a message to Mordecai
to go to Shushan and gather all the
Jews together and request that they
abstain from all food for three days
and make supplication to God and
she and her maids would do the same
that their people might be saved.
As the story goes on, we find that
when she approached the king, that
he held out the golden sceptre which
was a sign that she was favorably re
ceived. The king told Esther that
she should have what she asked even
to the half of his kingdom.
The success of Esther remained
wholly in the fact that she relied on
G^ri to carry her through, and she
had the united prayers of her people
to sustain her in her anxiety for her
tribe.
